Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens showed us there not even slightly innocent sides in Haromy Korine's Spring Breakers, but the true badass was Ashley Benson, whose character led a drug-fueled killing spree all in the name of sprang break. Yesterday Benson hosted 7-eleven's summer slurpee kickoff and though we regretted not being there to personally film a vine of the actress sucking down the new Light Sprite flavor, the actress was kind enough to give us a call from the convenient store's Sunset Boulevard location.

It's been a wild ride for you since her role in Spring Breakers. How are you handling it?
It's very weird and new for me, but it's been nothing but great things. Then comes the paparazzi and people wanting to know what I'm doing all the time.

How did you end up endorsing 7/11?
They approached me and they were doing this whole slurpee thing. I've been drinking them forever--since I was little. The Sprite flavor the first sugar free slurpee--it's only 20 calories. It's really good for summer. 7-eleven will have 49 cent slurps all Memorial Day weekend to kick off summer slurpees.

We loved how your profile in the May issue of NYLON turned out. Please tell me it was your favorite.
Yes, my favorite! It was so amazing. Guy Aroch is such an amazing photographer. My best friend came and it was super chill and relaxed. And the pictures are amazing. Every time they showed me one on set I freaked out. The styling was amazing--I loved all of my clothes. I got to help create the looks the way would do wear them, so I did a lot of edgier looks mixed with girly looks.

What's next for you?
There's a lot of really good projects that hopefully i'll be able to do. Everything that's been thrown at me has been amazing. They're all really great roles that I've really wanted to do. I want to play this crazy drug addict or some girl with problems. It's so far from who I am, so it's fun to play those far-out roles.

Emma Watson recently said in an interview that she wanted to play her character in The Bling Ring because it's the type of girl she hates the most.
It's fun--you're almost, kind of, making fun of them to a point. I can't talk about any specific roles yet.

Other than drinking 7/11 slurpees, what are your summer plans?
I'm going to Europe in July and I'm going to Mexico in two weeks. I never take any vacation time, so I'm super excited about that. My work schedule keeps me busy, but I love being busy, so it's not bad.

What music are you into?
Rihanna, Kanye West, and Chris Brown. I did go see Rihanna on tour and it was amazing. I'm really excited to see Kanye and Justin Timberlake this summer.

Is there anything interesting about you that you want your fans to know?
They can know that I'm single. A lot of sites are saying that I have a boyfriend. I'm a tomboy. I love hanging out with guys. I have a couple girlfriends, but I mostly hang out with guys. I'm not dating all of my friends like those sites say. Oh and--I'm learning the guitar and learning Portugeuese!

Avril Lavigne has been featured on NYLON's cover not once, not twice, but now--with this year's annual Music Issue--three times. But there's still plenty to talk about with our June/July star; not only does she have a new guy, a new record label, and a new(ish) clothing line Abbey Dawn, but also a new album. Though we have to wait until this fall to hear her fifth album, writer Liz Armstrong caught up with the Canadian singer-songwriter to get a preview. "This time it's not just all songs about relationships and dudes," explained Lavigne.

Before the issue officially hits newsstands on May 29, check out our sneak peek below along with exclusive outtakes from the shoot!

On her music industry origins:
"I wasn't the girl baring her midriff with backup dancers and a headset microphone. I came out and had a lot to say with my lyrics, and I played the guitar. I had a completely different getup, stage presence, everything."

On her new direction with this album:
"I just wanted to write songs and make something that was a little more artistic. I wanted to go down that road, I wasn't trying to write a big radio record."

On not holding back lyrically:
"Lyrically I pushed myself to talk about different subjects I haven't talked about before. I didn't want to be so simple. I tried to really express myself and go deeper."

On her fiance Chad Kroeger:
"He does what I do--he's a rocker, he plays guitar, he's onstage every night, he writes songs[....]We were having a really good time. We hit it off as writing partners, then friends, and we started dating last summer."

On always being totally honest:
"I'm so transparent. If I'm not being myself, I won't do well, and that goes for writing songs, work, relationships, everything. And if I'm not happy, people are going to know that."

Yes, movies are for telling stories--but let's be honest, how many times have you watched a film and thought, "I wish I had her outfit."

Indeed, so much of our fashion inspiration comes from film (there's a reason why we have a Private Icon in every issue of NYLON) that it seems impossible to be picking movie favorites, as we've been doing all month long, and not bring up for debate the most fashionable films ever.

Yesterday we asked for your nominations, and today we're putting them up for a vote.
The obvious trends on Instagram are food, pets, and oh you know how us gram-ers love a good selfie, but we've dug deep to find some weird trends (so deep that they were hard to find on Google) and were surprised at what we found.

For one, there's a major fitness craze sweeping this social platform. Using the hashtag #fitspo and #fitspiration (along with about 50 other hashtags on average), millions of users have banded together to inspire each other's fitness and healthy eating routines. In some cases, the trend appears a bit harsh, even extreme, with mantras like "You want results? Then train like it." or "Double tap if you by the end of 2013 you'll be in the best shape of your life." It's a little scary, yet we haven't been able to look away. Mostly, we were astounded by the number of followers these hashtaggers have--some reaching numbers in the millions. There's a lot of rock solid abs, plates full of protein, and some serious workout getups.

Getting involved can mean a major increase your own following along with lower blood pressure, but we'll stick to posting pics of our favorite indie hangouts, nail polish, and obviously ourselves. Tell us about the weirdest Insta-craze you've found in the comments section.

Earlier this month, we raved about Too Old To Be New, Too New To Be Classic, a 12-minute documentary put out by Red Bull Music Academy on the 12-year history of DFA Records. And not just because we love pretty much all bands they've worked with, from LCD Soundsystem to Yacht to Holy Ghost; the mini-movie is entertaining on just about every single level. No surprise, then, that it was directed by Max Joseph, the New York-raised, L.A.-based filmmaker behind some of our favorite short-form videos, not to mention one-half of the Catfish duo on MTV. Before this Saturday's DFA Records anniversary show in Brooklyn, we caught up with Joseph to find out just how hard it really is to track down James Murphy (hint: you may need to get on a cruise ship to find him) and learn about his upcoming "Saturday Night Fever for the electronic scene" movie.

Is it as exciting to have one of your projects be released on the internet as it is to have it aired on TV?
Every time a video comes out on the Internet, it feels like my birthday. i can't sleep the night before and spend the whole day on social media! There's definitely an instant gratification on Catfish too; Catfish is a fun project for me, but my career is as a filmmaker, so when I release a film it's weighted a little different for me.

So how'd you get connected with this documentary in the first place?
What happened was I had done a movie with my friend Casey [Neistat]--we took Nike's money and ran around the world with it, and made a Nike commercial from our adventures--and a production company in Brooklyn called me up, said they had seen the piece and had really loved it, and just wanted to talk to me about collaborating with me on something. And then they called a month later and were like, "Look, we're doing a series of vides with Red Bull Music Academy and one of the videos is about the anniversary of DFA, would you be interested in making a short doc?" And I was like, "Done." i knew DFA--I thought I was one of the very few people who knew about DFA beyond LCD Soundsystem--the song that Casey and I used in our Nike video is a DFA remix, I always want to use their songs, and any excuse to meet James and Juan Maclean and Nancy Whang to do that would be a great project. So it was a no-brainer. Then the time came to actually make it, and all of the sudden I really freaked out! I've interviewed and made films with people I really respect before, but there was something different here, because I thought, These guys are the coolest guys in the world, I need to be on my a game, I need to know their history, I need to be a music nerd for this.

Is it really as hard to track down James Murphy as the documentary makes it seem?
I was in New York for two weeks and that was the time we had all allotted for getting all the interviews. but James didn't get back to NY for those two weeks. Every time we were like, "Where's James?" no one knew, and eventually I said, "I'm going to go back to LA and start editing this because I don't know if he's coming back and if he'll be in the movie." Then the call came towards the end of the December, "James is going to be on a cruise ship DJing, we can get you onboard the cruise ship--just you, we can't set a time with James or a time to meet, you'll have to find him on the boat." So i went on this cruise ship by myself, which isn't very fun--it was fun for everyone else, but I was a man on a mission. I found him on the second day, after literally walking up and down the ship for six hours--I bumped into him in the corridor and we made a plan to meet the following day and he gave me an hour and half interview. And it was an amazing interview. It was so funny, anytime he was talking about the history [of DFA] he wasn't as engaged and wasn't as exciting, but in between the questions the things that he would say, the jokes he would make, he'd be so animated. It was clear that that should be in the movie. There are so many interesting characters at DFA--Jonathan [Galkin, the label's manager] is a character, James is a character, Chris who works in the office is a character. There's all this history and I realized that these people are more interesting and fascinating just to watch and learn than giving every bullet point of the history.

Where were you in 2001, when DFA was born?
I graduated high school in 2000 and I went to school in Providence, so i was there and would come back to New York and go out in the Lower East Side and Alphabet City. It was still really sketchy and dodge-y but starting to be cool. I wish I was going to Plant Bar!

What else is keeping you busy?
I'm co-writing and directing a movie for Working Title--we've got to write it first, and then if that goes well I'll be directing it. It's not set in stone but it's a movie that takes place in the world of electronic music, so very much in the same vein of DFA but the next generation. I would say electronica 1.0 is the '90s Underworld, Apex Twin, all those early trance guys, and then DFA came along and they were dance rock indie electronic, and now electronic music is Skrillex and Tiesto and Porter Robinson, so the writing takes place in that world. It's a coming-of-age story about a bunch of guys living in that universe. You might say a Saturday Night Fever for the electronic scene.

Whoa, that sounds awesome! Are you also working on the next season of Catfish?
I'm doing Catfish season two and working on [the script for the film] at the same time. They're going to announce the premiere date [of the next season] pretty soon, but the stories we've seen so far have just been really crazy and new original and already different from season one. Just when you think you'll know how it will go every time....

Were you recognized much more while filming season two?
Definitely a lot more eyes recognizing us as we travel through America. and also the people on this now have seen season one, which is good in a way because they know the drill. they know that we're not there to point fingers and condemn them, they know that they'll get a chance to say their side of the story and that this is a safe place for them. I think people are really interested in the show because in a world where almost every story has been told a million times, and there's nothing new under the sun, this is a fairly new phenomenon. So it's exciting, it feels like we're in new territory.

In the meantime, why do you hope people watch the DFA doc?
What's exciting about it is most of the stuff you make, whether it's a commercial or branded stuff or it's' for a general audience, your'e trying to connect to everyone. And what was great about this documentary was it's for my generation; people who love LCD Soundsystem, who grew up at a certain time, who are connected to the hipster movement whether they like it or not, this is the kind of thing that I can send to all my friends and they can be like, "That's cool that you made this."
REBECCA WILLA DAVIS

To kick off their new film division All Saints has just released New Music City--the first of many documentaries to be released by the British retailer. The film stars the Kings of Leon (try typing that band name out without getting Sex on Fire stuck in your head) and Turbo Fruits who all tell the story of why they've made Nashville their home, how they've established their new label Serpents and Snakes, and why their hair is longer than anyone else's in the industry.

The third time is definitely the charm in the case of our third Instagram competition!
This past weekend, we asked you to post an intagram pic of your favorite outfit and include the hashtag #NylonOutfit. The results showcased a wild variety of style, from chic French eclectic traveler to Blair Waldorf-approved high society darling, the submissions pretty much covered it all. Narrowing it down was tough, but we managed to select our top eight favorites. Check out the winners in the gallery below and keep eye out for theme of next weekend's contest.

The TV spin-off can be tricky: Sometimes, the new series is better than the original (see: Beavis and Butt-head spawn Daria), sometimes it's just as popular as the first (see: Cheers and its follow-up Frasier), sometimes it births more than one show (see: All That and The Amanda Show, Kenan & Kel, Zoey 101, KaBlam!, and Action League Now!, among others). But it can also result in a total dud.

When we first heard that The Vampire Diaries was getting a spin-off show following Old One Klaus as he returns to his hometown of New Orleans, we weren't sure where in the spectrum it would fall. But now that the CW has released a trailer and a sneak peek clip for The Originals, which premieres this fall, we're getting pretty excited.

Watch both clips below, and then let us know: Are you gonna tune in come September?

Vampire bite or no, it may just live forever.

DIANA - "Born Again"

Good Listener's Canadian correspondents (we've got ears everywhere!) have been singing the praises of this Toronto art-pop quartet for months, so when the news that they'd signed with Jagjaguwar hit our inboxes this week, we were not the least bit surprised. The undulating, color-rich video for the first single off their self-titled debut is a million times more entertaining than a Magic Eye book (on acid), and provides the perfect visual counterpart to the song's sleepy yet impassioned vocals, shadowy synths, and breezy beats. We're not sure what they're being born again into, but if it's as much of a trip as this video implies, sign us up.

Badlands - "Sleeping Beauty"

Not too much is known about this dreamy downer-pop duo whose first track starting showing up on music blogs this week, but the Mazzy Star-struck track held together by a faint underwater heartbeat has got us intrigued to say the least.

Lucius - "Until We Get There"

After the demo version of Lucius' "Until We Get There" aired on an episode of New Girl last week, fans flocked to a YouTube upload of the song in the tens of thousands. We didn't see the episode in question, but from the sound of the song--a lush swirl of harmonies featuring the Lucius ladies at their most Lykke Li-like--we're guessing the soft drums kicked in at the start of a very bittersweet Nick-and-Jess montage. In exchange for an email address, get a free download of the song at the band's site, and relive whatever scene you like until the band's debut full-length comes out this fall.

Kitchen Party - 11th Floor (mix)

OK, naptime's over. Hit play on this mixtape courtesy of new Island signees Kitchen Party and get ready for a Massive Attack of spontaneous dancing.
MELISSA GIANNINI
