JUNO Rock City

Wednesday 31 October 2007 at 1:21 pm I was lucky enough to catch a preview of the very cute, upcoming teen pregnancy comedy JUNO recently. Cuter still is Ellen Page as the preggers Juno (done deed with another cutie Michael Cera) who rocks out in old-school grandpa sweater vests and oversized plaid flannel shirts reminiscent of the grunge era.The whole geek-rock-chic look is sure to bring you smiles all over!!

And Juno's casual "rock influenced" outfits were probably no mistake either. Remember to keep an eye and ear out for the following: Jennifer Garner in an Alice in Chains tee, a heavy Sonic Youth homage, guitar-playing, and original score by Kimya Dawson of the Moldy Peaches. Super soundtrack all around.

P.S. I also spy a ton of American Apparel on Michael Cera's track team uniform... yeahh, work them high socks. JUNO comes out December 5th, but be sure to check out the trailer at www.myspace.com/junothemovie

Party of the Vandals

Monday 29 October 2007 at 12:40 pm Celebrations abounded last night at I Heart, the scene of the launch party for Claw Money's Nike Vandal. The female graffiti artist designed these killer kicks for Nike, marking the second-ever collaboration between Nike and a woman designer. A great turnout of guests were in attendance, including our favorite vegan, Moby! These sneakers, feminized with peacock feathers, a plethora of color choices, and the nixing of bulky foam, are available today, October 27th, at Nike Tier Zero retailers.

"IT" IS WHAT "IT" IS

Monday 29 October 2007 at 11:55 am When NYLON Magazine takes over LA, havoc is expected. It’s the kind of wild, rambunctious fun Los Angeles needs to stay alive. This party was no exception. When I got there, the line was wrapped around the block, into the dark abyss of Ivar Avenue. All the commotion was happening at the Green Door, right next to the not-so-haute/hot Cabana Club. The crowd of partygoers at the latter donned their best Halloween costumes (frat boy dressed as a bee anyone?), while NYLON party crashers looked like a generational mix of unapologetic hipness.

CHICAGO FASHION WEEK: GEN ART FRESH FACES SHOW

Friday 12 October 2007 at 12:23 pm By now, we all know (thanks to notable alums like Zac Posen and Rebecca Taylor) Gen Art provides a great stage to showcase new design talent. In Chicago, Fresh Faces is no different-if anything, it's probably a bit more important here because our city still lacks much of the infrastructure for launching new designers. After taking in the show, we were struck by how much the whole process reminded us of a sort of high-school-esque Prom Court Crowning; there is the anticipation, the event and of course, the after party (though the James Hotel is a bit more lux than your standard gymnasium and there weren't any unfortunate looking chaperones). But, the kings and queens of Fresh Faces Chicago weren't clad in football helmets and pompoms. Rather they were a mixed bunch of young designers. So as self appointed year book editors, we came up with some style superlatives of our own for the fresh faces class of 2007:

XOXO, Andrea and Megan.

CHICAGO FASHION WEEK: JAKE

Thursday 11 October 2007 at 4:42 pm Lance Lawson and Jim Wetzel owners of the Chicagoland staple Jake (shopjake.com) hosted a bubble-filled reception to honor designer Doo.ri Tuesday afternoon. The Newberry Library was a surprisingly appropriate setting to showcase her spring collection. We loved the half-sweater/high waisted skirt combination -- sexy, yet so sophisticated.

MAC LUNCHEON FOR FASHION FOCUS

Thursday 11 October 2007 at 11:31 am MAC attack! We all know make-up is delicious, but that took on new meaning this afternoon. M.A.C. invited us to a lavish luncheon at NoMi as the kick-off for Chicago Fashion Week. After previewing Doo.ri's spring collection at the Newberry Library (pictures & blog to come!), we headed over to Michigan Ave. for Sancerre, sushi and a sneak peek at the looks for tonight's Gen Art Chicago Fresh Faces in Fashion show.

CHICAGO FASHION WEEK: KAREN ZAMBOS

Tuesday 09 October 2007 at 12:12 pm Chicago isn't just home to fresh faces like Elise. Before adding colorful frocks to Nicole Ritchie and Mischa Barton's closets, Karen Zambos (www.karenzambos.com ) spent her summers vintage shopping in Chicago's Bucktown neighborhood and hanging out at Oak Street Beach. Always happy to support Chicago fashion, Karen gave us some insight on her spring collection and advice for fashion week:

CHICAGO FASHION WEEK: ELISE BERGMAN

Tuesday 09 October 2007 at 12:07 pm New York City, Paris, Milan, London... Chicago? This week is Chicago Fashion Week, and for many of you, that probably doesn't mean a whole lot. In a city known more for its unfortunate weather and comfort food, fashion hasn't always been our main attraction. But things are changing. Finally. As two editors obsessed with getting dressed, we're more than ready to embrace the change and share our musings from the midwest as guest bloggers. We'll fill you in on the best new local designers, some great off-the-beaten path boutiques and all the excitement of Fashion Focus Chicago.

To kick-off the week, we caught up with two of our favorite designers to come out of the Windy City, Elise Bergman and Karen Zambos.

VERONIQUE LEROY

Tuesday 09 October 2007 at 10:41 am Instead of walking down a runway, the models in Veronique Leroy's show sat, stood and even laid down on the large white stage the designer used to showcase her collection. The model's looks alternated between simple, minimalist make-up and dramatic red lips while the collection held everything from simple jumpsuits to highly detailed evening dresses and even crocheted shirts, jackets and shorts. Despite the differing styles, the collection came across as coherent, organized and different.

CHRISTIAN LACROIX

Tuesday 09 October 2007 at 10:37 am One word comes to mind when thinking about the over fifty looks that Christian Lacroix sent down the runway: hats. Each model was outfitted with a large hat that at times distracted from the look itself. If you could catch a glimpse at what the model wore on the rest of her body there were plenty of cinch belts, long, delicate evening dresses, bright pink and yellow prints and closely fitted dresses that recalled the 1940s to go around.

LANVIN

Tuesday 09 October 2007 at 10:35 am Not a single patterned material was found on Alber Elbaz's Lanvin collection. Instead, the designer played with the fabrics themselves (heavy silks and chiffon) dramatically rouching collars, carefully draping fabrics and often accessorizing with belts. There was equal play between bright and vibrant colors as well as neutral colors making his designs the true focus of the show.

HERMES

Tuesday 09 October 2007 at 10:33 am The inspirations for Jean Gaultier's spring collection for Hermes? Safaris, India, England and explorers of the early 1900s. Gaultier began his show with muted white, cream, beige and grey belted dresses, riding boots and jackets, vests and shorts; constantly mixing and combining for heavily layered looks with bolts of colors to be found in the accessories (hot pink croc riding boots and orange bracelets) as well as turbans on the models. The layering carried through to the end of the show that finished with brightly colored sari inspired dresses that contrasted beautifully with the shows beginning looks.

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN

Tuesday 09 October 2007 at 10:20 am Alexander McQueen's spring collection was created in homage to his mentor, the late Isabella Blow. McQueen commissioned one of Blow's favorite designers and collaborators Philip Treacy to design elaborate hats for each of the models. The collection was brimming with belted jackets, kimono inspired looks and wildly feathered dresses also inspired by Blow. The result? A fantastic mélange of fabrics and prints, cuts and shapes that was at once risqué and imaginative and totally wearable.

YOHJI YAMAMOTO

Thursday 04 October 2007 at 3:13 pm Yohji Yamamoto's spring show was classic Yamamoto with all the usual suspects that have come to define his look; men's suits re-imagined for women? Check. Asymmetry, lots of black and flat shoes? Done, done and done. While the collection was unmistakably Yamamoto the designer did include brightly patterned jumpsuits, suits with ruffled hoop skirts attached to the back and floor length tassels attached to dresses and suits. With well over twenty years of show experience behind him Yamamoto appears to subscribe to the theory if ain't broke don't fix it.

SOPHIA KOKOSALAKI

Thursday 04 October 2007 at 3:13 pm Balance was key to Sophia Kokosalaki's collection; little cropped jackets, bubble skirts and cocktail dresses happily shared the runway with sleek and simple evening gowns, extra long tank dresses and wide leg trousers making the collection appear equal parts modern and retro. Refusing to forsake crisp tailoring and bold fabrics in the name of being pretty, Kokosalaki's effortlessly juxtaposed the strength of her tailoring and fabrics with the simple and classic beauty of her lady like designs.

MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA

Thursday 04 October 2007 at 3:12 pm Martin Margiela's show presented a progression in cut, print and fabric beginning with the simplest of stretch fabric bandeau tops and (super short!) boy shorts and ending in a carefully tailored full-length evening gown. In between, basic black and tan tube tops evolved in to patterned chiffon dresses by way of mini dresses and exaggerated square shoulder jackets. The designer lived up to his motto, "learn to live incognito" by covering the eyes of his models ensuring that the focus always remained on his clothes.
