GOOD LISTENER

GOOD LISTENER

A very special edition, featuring our six favorite songs of the week.

Smith Westerns- "Varsity"

The first single off Smith Westerns' third LP Soft Will (out June 11 on Mom+Pop) finds the Chicago trio thickening their brand of jangle-glam bubblegum into a lush wall of glistening synths and crystalline sighs. And lucky Coachella-goers will likely get to hear it in the flesh next month.

Big Deal - "In Your Car"

It could just be that this song reminds me of my high school days, blasting Belly and Bettie Serveert from the shot speakers of my beat-up Dodge Neon, but I can't really imagine a better soundtrack for cruising around on aimless summer nights. Kind of surprising that it comes courtesy of a duo from London, but why question when there's dashboard drumming to do?

Nelly - "Hey Porsche"

Continuing with the car theme comes this undeniably addictive new banger from Nelly. In case you're not one of the 2.5 million-plus viewers who've already enjoyed the video, I suggest making a detour right now to go check it out. But then come right back, k?

Odonis Odonis - "Better"

There's so much to love in this two-minute scorcher from the Toronto-based industrial surfgazers--the funky post-punk bass groove, the spooky shrieks that you know are coming but still make you jump a little, and then all the mysterious clicks and clacks and zinks and zoinks that make appearances intermittently. They've got an EP coming out April 16 on Buzz Records, and an upcoming tour supporting Metz as well.

Laura Stevenson - "L-Dopa"

Let's all gather 'round the campfire now and bask in the glow of this scintillating slow-burner off the Brooklyn songwriter's forthcoming full-length, Wheel, out April 23 on Don Giovanni. After SXSW, she hits the road on a headlining tour with Fieldmouse. Lovely.

BONUS TRACK!
Danny Brown - "#HottestMC"

The Detroit MC spits killer rhymes over psychedelic strums and a droning loop in this fiery response to the media's list-making obsession. Oh, and newsflash! Kitty (formerly Kitty Pryde) is joining him on the road after the dates he's already got scheduled with Baauer (of "Harlem Shake" fame). Who's excited!?
