If you weren't paying close attention to Colleen Green's new track "Heavy Shit," off of her debut album
Sock It To Me, you may only hear her sweet, cooing voice and think that she was just some happy-go-lucky girl with a penchant for power chords. And that's the point. "It's a short, poppy, energetic song about being super depressed and unsure about every single thing in life. A lot in a little. That's me, in a nutshell," explains Green.
Indeed, things are much darker in the L.A.-based musician's world than her dulcet vocals suggest. As is hinted at in the song title, the track is Green "trying to deal with things inside your brain that are sometimes un-deal-with-able, and it's so hard to go [at] it alone," as she puts it. "The shit becomes all you think about, all you can focus on, and it drags you down." Soundwise, she describes it thusly: "I introduce The Explosion to JEFF the Brotherhood, but I'm not happy about it."
Maybe such heavy lyrical content needs to be wrapped in such an instantly catchy, lo-fi rock shell, because instead of the two-minute track bringing us down, we've been playing it on repeat. And now, you can too: We've got the exclusive premiere of "Heavy Shit," and you can download it for free right here, right now. Like what you hear?
