The five new songs driving us crazy this week.
Youth Lagoon - "Dropla"
Sometimes songs give off the impression that they were recorded in an old, dark mansion, each element calling out from behind a different half-closed door. This is one of those times. Somewhere in that candlelit manse, in between a steady dripping faucet and intermittent sleigh bells, Trevor Powers, a.k.a. Youth Lagoon, metes out a faint mantra: You'll never die, you'll never die, you'll never die. "Dropla" is the first single off Youth Lagoon's sophomore album, Wondrous Bughouse, out March 5 via Fat Possum. MELISSA GIANNINI
Blood Orange - "Cyan (Home Recording Jan 13 2013 Kindness Cover)"
We've had our ear on Dev Hynes of Lightspeed Champion and Blood Orange for a while now. And he's been garnering quite a bit of attention as of late for his genius production work on Sky Ferreira's "Everything Is Embarassing" and Solange Knowles's True EP. This past week, he shared a really fun, really Prince-y cover of a Kindness song, "Cyan." Incorporating bits of the fanned-out drums of "Everything Is Embarrassing" and backing vocals from Tracy Antonopoulos (of Cable), the song served as a break from some of the production work he's been doing. (Wow, my last break involved a large bag of pita chips and back-to-back episodes of Bridezilla. Talk about embarrassing.) MG
Amor de Dias - "Jean's Waving"
I'm in love with this sun-kissed and simple new video for "Jean's Waving" off The House at Sea, the sophomore release of Amor de Dias (Alasdair of The Clientele and Lupe of Pipas), out January 29 on Merge. Shot at Wivenhoe on the Essex coast, it just encompasses all that is good about those melty first days of spring. MG
Night Moves - "Colored Emotions"
About 24 seconds into "Colored Emotions," Night Moves transport you to a world of slow-motion psychedelia: Suddenly, the world is bound together by hazy, laconic vocals and a groovy, tie-dyed baseline. Between the accenting cymbal crashes and pillows of reverb-laden lushness, Night Moves prove themselves virtuosic time travelers--which makes sense for a band that names both the Spinners and the Rolling Stones as influences. So what does disco-jiving mean in 2013? A wandering slow jam with wistful ambiance and a perfect soundtrack for daydreaming. Not that we're advocating you take a break to listen to it right now, or anything. Night Moves' debut album Colored Emotions is out now on Domino. MOLLY BEAUCHEMIN
Parquet Courts - "Borrowed Time"
Last year, Japandroids kick-flipped their way into many "Best of 2012" lists by putting out an album that delivered on its title's promise: Celebration Rock celebrated rock at a time when the genre had taken an unlikely backseat to a new radio darling (or at least the only money-making breed of music), EDM. Now, with the rise of another band with vintage sensibilities and a throwback sound, Parquet Courts have crashed onto our radar. Check out the new video for their high energy single, "Borrowed Time," recorded live at Brooklyn's Death By Audio. Prepare for some maniacally catchy hooks and plenty of strum-driven guitar turbulence. "It seems these days I'm captive in this borrowed time," sings Andrew Savage during the song's propulsive chorus. Not a bad place to hang out, if this is what it sounds like. Parquet Courts' Light Up Gold is out now on Dull Tools. MB
