Selena Gomez: Disney star, pop singer, good girl, right?
Well, kind of; though she's not ditching her squeaky clean image just yet--"I think [the paparazzi] are over me because I'm so boring[...] I get to Topanga Mall, and they're like, 'Why is she back at the same place?'" Gomez told our Executive Editor Ashley Baker--she's subverting expectations with her law-breaking, party-making turn in Harmony Korine's upcoming Spring Breakers.
As it turns out, Gomez is more than her carefully crafted image suggests. And we were there to hear all about it. While you wait for our February issue to hit newsstands, get a sneak peek of our cover star and her thoughts on breaking the mold, making friends with Taylor Swift, and falling in (or, as the case may be, out) of love, throughout the next week as we unveil exclusive outtakes and quotes.
With today's premiere of a new Spring Breakers trailer (watch it here), here's what Gomez told NYLON about taking on this role: "It was my first audition in years. I definitely felt that with my first stepping-out role, I should choose something that I could understand a little more. I was really nervous, but Harmony took a chance with me. He said, 'You live in this bubble, and I'm going to take you out of it, but you have to trust me.'"
The film's director, Korine, agreed, telling us, "You hear about young starlets being so problematic, but Selena's really together. She has a very strong work ethic, and she was really willing to experiment and play. She was very much into trying to invent her future."

At first, I wasn't so sure about her on the cover. But one thing I know is that NYLON does manage to show former Disney girls in new light. I like the cover, the text, the clothes and Selena! Making Grand Prairie, Tx proud!

Selena is my all time favorite former (or present) Disney star (tho I LOVE Hillary Duff). Selena is breath taking. She gets too much "hate" that borders on Bigotry. I hope she is offered endless opened doors i hollywood and endless opportunities. She shines.

No, no, no. With the exception of 90s stars (Shirley, Gwen) all the covers from the past few months seem geared to bring in the tween demographic. What happened to featuring young, talented actresses who are not still helping Tiger Beat sell covers?

I never really complain on the internet, so I apologize in advance. Not a big fan of this, Selena isn't Nylon. Shouldn't the cover stars be Nylon Girls? (Unique, creative, game-changing, fashionable, talented, hardworking, non-conforming, inspiring, etc.) She is the living embodiment of mainstream Disney candy-pop conformism. (Which is fine! But it's not Nylon.)
Why not Lana Del Rey? Or a rising star nobody's heard of yet? I understand you put what sells on the cover... But please don't sell out to mainstream culture Nylon!

Possibly the greatest misstep I have seen Nylon make as far as cover choices go. Please return to allowing the faces of such talents as Evan Rachel Wood, Mila Kunis, or Emma Stone grace your covers.

you know, i wasn't really that into the choice when i first heard. but the truth is, she's in a freaking harmony korine movie--if that's not a subversive pick, i don't know what is. why can't we accept that some young stars end up on a path that they ultimately don't see for themselves, and then support them as they try riskier things, rather than scream that once a disney star always a disney star?!

disappointing. if i want to read about selena gomez, it'll be on the cover of Seventeen. NOT Nylon.
to be clear, i like selena. but seeing her on the cover of Nylon, which i read to GET AWAY from same celebrities who are recycled and circulated amongst "mainstream" women's magazines, is just surprising and sad.

I admire where Selena stands in her life and she knows her place in life as well. She's always being pulled into the disney star stereotypes. She does not conform to all the values, nor does she need to prove that she does or does not either. She is fashionable, talented, hardworking, unpretentious, etcetc in her own ways. I'm sure they have good reasons for picking her and I am proud of her to be on the cover :) Congrats Sel <3

Getting your inspiration from Disney and Teen Vogue wasn't what I thought Nylon was about. Why not put Adam Green and Binki Shapiro on the cover? Or perhaps "Warm Bodies" stars Nicholas Hoult and Teresa Palmer? They are mainstream without having to be splashed all over glossies. Serious downgrade Nylon!
