Jamaican Queens - "Kids Get Away"
Downbeat doomster-divers Jamaican Queens provide the synthy fuzz-pop soundtrack to this creeper of a video, inspired by the true story of a girl who was followed home from a Detroit bar and violently assaulted. Imbedded alongside a message to be cautious but not give in to fear is a super-catchy hook. The band's debut album,
Wormfood, is out March 5.
Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite - "Get Up" and "I Don't Believe a Word You Say"
The folk-soul-blues power duo of Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite released a one-two punch this week in anticipation of their upcoming collab album
Get Up! First up was the video premiere of the fiery
"I Don't Believe a Word You Say," a session documented as part of a documentary on the making of the album. And then came
the title track, a sparse, raspy number with echoed, wavering harmonica and guitar licks trading off over a killer bass line.
Get Up! is out January 29 on Stax.
Caitlin Rose- "I Was Cruel"
With hushed honeycomb vocals, warm strums, and kicky percussion, Nashville songwriter Caitlin Rose has crafted an instant Americana classic in "I Was Cruel," the first single off
The Stand-In, the 25-year-old's sophomore album, out March 5 on ATO Records.
Country Mice - "Giving Your Heart Away"
The Brooklyn indie rockers offer up a slow-burner single that builds under a repeated hum-along chorus in this track off their second LP,
Hour of the Wolf, out February 19 on Lotion Records.
Fitz & the Tantrums - "Santa Stole My Lady"
Just in time for Christmas, L.A. indie-soul outfit Fitz & the Tantrums offer this festive digital stocking stuffer steeped in the slightly naughty tradition of "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" or "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer". The free download's available over at
fitzandthetantrums.com. Happy holidays! And stay tuned for next week's edition of Good Listener, in which we post our five picks of bands to watch out for in 2013. Major.
