PINK LADIES

PINK LADIES

Dakota joins a long line of really rosy babes.

When Dakota Fanning was caught by paparazzi rocking pink-tipped hair, she joined a tradition of Pink Ladies that starts with a 1999 cover of NYLON Magazine.  In the issue, Gwen Stefani poses with pink pigtails on the cover, shot by Terry Richardson.

Around the same time, Kate Moss walked the Chloe catwalk during Stella McCartney's first season with magenta hair and a blue evening gown; later, she starred in a Juergen Teller portrait series with lighter bubblegum locks.

Then came Avril's music videos, and Natalie Portman in Closer, and a general return to pink-as-faux-punk - followed by Kirsten Dunst rocking pink wigs in Sofia Coppola's version of Marie Antoinette.

And slowly, the fashion world started going rose again.  There was the Bleach London wave with Mary Charteris, Sky Ferreira, and Pixie Geldof rocking hot pink hair in the front row of major Paris catwalks.  There was Charlotte Free and her quick rise to the top of Vivienne Westwood and Jeremy Scott's casting lists.  And Rihanna and Katy Perry made pink a pop statement.

This season, we saw our cover girl, Dianna Agron, streak her hair with highlighter colors for the new season of Glee.  (She was playing "a skank" but looked pretty, anyway.)  We did an entire beauty spread on pink-tinged hair.  Dani Stahl and Sarah Lewitinn both arrived in the office with pink hair (Dani's was bright and rich, Sarah's was washed-out and bleached).  And now Dakota, looking adorable but also a little bit knowing, with her hair the color of LipSmackers strawberry gloss.

Welcome to the club, kid.

I think she should have bleached it a little bit more. Would fit better to her.

A little tip for those who dyed their hair and want to maintain the color: put hair dye into your conditioner and use it whenever you wash your hair. it'll keep the color vibrant. i like the washed out look, but every few days i add an extra kick of color.

That Gwen Stefani issue was the very first Nylon I ever purchased! Still a subscriber to this day. Keep up the good work.

Sorry to crash the Nylon promo party, but pink hair was definitely around before Nylon's 1999 cover. The manic panic-esque hair trend hit its peak in the early to mid 90's, with grunge and Kurt Cobain. I guess it takes awhile for street trends to filter into the mainstream fashion world though, which then likes to claim the trends as their own...
