If seeing the mod style in our current issue inspired you to wear more eyeliner and shorter skirts than usual, you definitely want to visit iTunes right now. They've got Michaelangelo Antonioni's 1966 masterpiece Blow-Up on sale for $6. And while it's rare that we proclaim anything "the best movie ever," this classic British flick - Antonioni's first English language movie - definitely makes it into our must-sees.
It centers on 24 hours in the life of a playboy fashion photographer Thomas (David Hemmings) as he swings from models to actresses to rock groupies, eventually obsessing over a beautiful but nervous girl he meets in Hyde Park. But after he develops the negatives from his shoot with her, he realizes they were standing on the edges of a murder scene...
Besides being a good mystery thriller, Blow-Up is an amazing archive of mod fashion, and features clothes by Jocelyn Rickards, who created the iconic Bond Girl style of the '60s in From Russia With Love. The film also boasts an astonishing number of "screenshot this!" cameos, including a naked Jane Birkin, a mini-skirted Veruschka, Polly Magoo inspiration Peggy Moffitt, and an uncredited live performance by Led Zeppelin emperor Jimmy Page (who was then in The Yardbirds).
You can buy it on iTunes for $6, and consider it the ultimate "investment piece" - if you love Sixties art, music, and fashion, you'll be watching this movie whenever you're bored for the rest of your life.
