Johnny Depp is reason enough to see any movie, but the newest
Pirates of the Caribbean flick boasts something else we're dying to watch: model and actress Gemma Ward as the mermaid queen Tamara. The Australian native was once the face of Marc Jacobs and Burberry; now she plays a beautiful but vicious sea creature whose similarity to pretty mermaid cuties like Ariel stops with her tale.
The same is true of her beauty look - rather than give into the usual iridescent pinks and greens associated with the water nymphs, the movie paints Ward and her tribe as intrinsically tied to the sea. Their shimmering eyelids look like broken rocks, their hair has the texture of floating seaweed, and their skin is flat and smooth like a lake. It's a cooler, edgier take on mermaid beauty, and rightly so - as actor Ian McShane recently said, "Mermaids eat sailors for breakfast!"
