SKINS

Vendi. Vidi. Vegan. Thanks Marc Jacobs!

When Kova & T launched their PVC leggings last year, they turned the industrial rubber into a serious luxury craze.  Now Marc Jacobs shows his own spin on the factory material, creating faux ostrich skin bags for his Marc by Marc Jacobs line.

The wallets, clutches, and totes range from $68 - $400, and they're totally vegan - despite looking like the ostrich-skin status bags from Hermes, Prada, and other major labels.  You can get them in ivory, pink, violet, and gray, and get them now - this is one Fall purchase you can safely carry all Spring and Summer without losing any trend ground (or losing any sleep, since despite mimicking ostrich skin, these things are totally animal-free).

Did you know that plastic is not good for the planet it's definitely not biodégradable. I much prefer good leather bag or shoes. "Some" animals are here to feed us and dress us.

Except PVC is recyclable. And if you ever want to "recycle" this bag just put it on eBay and someone else will wear it for a few years. No need to have it biodegrade if it's always in someone's closet.

as a strict vegetarian who is completely bananas about marc jacobs the line and the man, i was happy to know he made something that i can actually buy! i hope he continues to make vegan friendly stuff, or start a vegan friendly line for people like me who adore him. also there's always places to donate when you don't want things anymore.

The production of PVC itself is harmful in terms of health to the workers that handle it. I'd much rather they skin an ostrich instead.

vegan or not, these bags are boring...and $400 for a piece of plastic?! are you joking? you can get a "vegan leather" wallet at target for $10.

You're right - PVC is not biodegradable. But neither is leather, as it's treated with chemicals to preserve it/prevent it from rotting. Polyurethane, however, is biodegradable and a greener alternative. Though of course the greenest choice of all, like some have mentioned, is to reduce, then to reuse, THEN to recycle :) (Also, there's the ethical aspect to consider.)

Oh, and @meghan. Slaughterhouses have some of the most heinous conditions for workers of any industry, as well. We need to vote with our dollars to get truly environmentally and worker-friendly alternatives. Check out Matt and Nat. :)
