ART WARS

Can reality TV make a gallery show happen?

Bravo's Work of Art might be over, but the competition between the contestants definitely isn't.

Two of the show's artists are facing off in New York gallery openings just a few days apart.

Underdog Abdi Farah won the competition with his final collection of paintings, sculptures and drawings entitled "Luminous Bodies." Inspired by a scene between Yoda and Luke Skywalker in Star Wars,  his mysterious pieces represent the body's ability to move beyond the physical.

And even though Farah may have claimed his first-place prize of a show at the Brooklyn Museum, he's not the only success story.

Second runner-up Miles Mendenhall also scored a solo exhibition of his black and white graphic prints at Half Gallery (which, in a convenient twist, is co-owned by Work of Art judge Bill Powers).

Is it any coincidence that these two exhibitions are happening at the same time in the same city? We don't think so. So, in this throwdown between the artists, whose show would you rather see?

Abdi was the better artist...Miles was the better portrayal of what everyone thinks an artist should be. I'd go to Abdi's showing, but I'd love to do drinks and talk existentialism with Miles.

I was rooting for Abdi the first time I saw his work on the show. Both Abdi and Miles were reasons why I watched the show. Abdi was always an amazing artist to me and Miles was just nice to look at. If I had to choose I'd go to Abdi's show

Work of Art was definetly one of the best shows that was on Bravo. Ever! Me and my boyfriend were rooting for Abdi the entire season, slightly annoyed by Miles' arrogance, but would definetly see Abdi's show first, then maybe just maybe Miles. I agree that Miles' work is what everyone thinks should be art...but Abdi brings it back to the basics with his exquisite painting abilities and master of the human body, his sculptures were AMAZABALLS! Bottom line, cannot wait to go see Abdi's show, its just a drive away for me!

Miles throughout the show was by far the better artist. Abdi sloppily and luckily threw shit together in the last seconds of every challenge. Miles knew what he was doing, knows art, and will forever make it. Abdi was considering quitting. You don't just quit art. To a true artist, that is not an option. Miles' final gallery show on work of art was weaker than every piece he had made before that. But he will do well, and abdi will fade into the background. Like winners of American Idol... we all remember Adam Lambert, but it was Kris Allen that actually won that season.

Abdi would definitely be my first pick. I loved him all season, and I think the way he was able to make groundbreaking and innovative art and still portray the importance of classical technique was fantastic.

What about peregrine though!!? She totally deserves a gallery show.... her aesthetic and taste for pageantry would make such a fun exhibit opening!

Miles hands down. You see, Miles is gorgey and an intelligent person as well as a stunning artist. Going to his show would mean I might get to talk to him (almond croissants anyone?). Abdi was my second favourite after Miles, so it's not that big of a deal. Abdi seemed like someone you could have fun with, someone to party with at 2 am. However, Miles's mustard sweater and flannel shirts make me feel all gooey inside.... so Miles wins.

Abdi's art is real, and relatable. Miles is a conceptual artist, which half of conceptual art, is possessing the ability to talk bullshit. So Abdi, hands-down.
