DIY: CHANEL NOUVELLE VAGUE

DIY: CHANEL NOUVELLE VAGUE

Get the summer's hottest shade without burning your budget.

Since 2007, Pantone (i.e. the kingdom of color) has announced an annual Color of the Year.  The Color of the Year awarded for 2010? Turquoise!

We're not sure whether or not Chanel's latest nail lacquer, Nouvelle Vague, had anything to with this decision, but we'd like to think so.  Somewhat between a turquoise and faded teal, the polish brightens even the dullest of outfits, but won't overwhelm a bolder ensemble.  Inspired by Pantone and Chanel, we've decided to put our color mixing skills to the test and see if we could make a budget-friendly duplicate.

Our winning recipe: Mix six parts of an opaque white polish,  with three parts of Sally Hansen's Insta-Dri in "Brisk Blue," and one part of a forest green polish (CND's "Green Scene" works great).

The brand fingerpaints nailpolish has a color called Blissfully blue and it looks just like the chanel color.

Looooove this! I think Sephora by O.P.I. has a similar colour too.

Love this colour. And I thoroughly agree. Joe Fresh "Mint" is very similar and much more inexpensive.

Yeah, I would just go with OPI or Essie that have almost the same color. The Today Show just did a story on this, and I actually prefer the general pastel nail polish trend better than this specific aqua color.

China Glaze's "For Audrey" should do the trick, as well! A lovely Tiffany's-inspired teal.

American Aparrel and Chanel and the only two vendors licensed to sell this color. Buy the American Apparel version it's called Office, it's only 6 bucks!

Or just order Ginger and Liz's polish Boy Toy for $12. It's exactly the same and was out before Chanel's color.

Urban Outfitters has a Knockout Matte Nail Polish called Liberty that looks the same. If you're not into matte you could top it with a clear coat.

By the time you buy all 4 of those polish's to make the chanel color, you may as well just go buy the chanel and save yourself the mess!

I have the Essie one on my toenails right now, its called "Mint Candy Apple". I think it cost me about $8 at Ulta. I don't particularly care if a nail color is in or out, I just really love any shade of teal!! Use to have this color back in the mid-ninties.

Just get the China Glaze For Audrey. It is the exact color just without the subtle glitter that Nouvelle Vague has. DIY? You're 6 x 4.99 for each bottle of nail polish is greater than 23.

I like the color, but the China Glaze color works perfectly, and it's only about 7 bucks. I guess if you already have white, blue, and green, this would make sense for DIY. Otherwise, why waste your money. Also, this color was popular about 6 months ago. It's pretty much on it's way out.

I just went and dug out my old Hard Candy nail polish in Sky. I guess it's manicure time! I wonder if I could mix it to make it darker...

Funny this story came up because I have been looking a color like Chanel Nouvelle Vague but on my budget. So after reading this "recipe" I used colors I already had. I mixed about 25 parts of an Ulta white, 5 parts of Sally Hansen Blue Blast and 1 part of Rimel Camoflage...it looks just like the color on this page. Next time I am going to try adding a little gray so it looks more like the Chanel on the picture of Beyonce's nails. I use old contact lens cases to mix my colors so there is no mess.
