Of all the childhood smells we remember - the tart whiff of grape juice, the soothing blunt wax of a Crayola Big Box - maybe nothing's as sweet as Hello Kitty.
A cross between powdered plastic and tangy florals, the sweet and sassy scent came infused in all of Hello Kitty's various toys - the dolls, the pencil cases, the tiny pink tea sets.
Now Sanrio's gotten wise to that sniff of nostalgia, and released two Hello Kitty perfumes. Selling for $20 each, the scents are a collaboration with the fragrance house Demeter, and come with various themes. While
Hello Kitty's new "signature" perfume smells like red, green, and yellow apples - a nod to Kitty's favorite food - the other perfume,
named for Little Twin Stars, has an airy citrus flavor to match their flying graphics.
Do either smell like the original Hello Kitty scent? Alas, no. But if you're looking for something slightly more grown up, this is a good way to go. And if you really are killing to smell like Hello Kitty, circa 1990, here's a secret:
