We have fond memories of Gap's first scents, a trio of light-and-fluffy sniffers that included Grass (which smelled exactly like a lawn mower afterthought), Dream (a sticky sweet purple scent), and Heaven, which was so popular among our junior high classmates, you'd swear it was the actual whiff of teen spirit.
Those beloved bottles have since disappeared, but Gap has a new attempt at fragrance out today. Called "Stay," it promises "a unique balance of top notes: green hydrangea—a subtle bloom you have to sink your nose into in order to experience—and mildly spicy freesia."
But after spraying it on various friends all weekend, here's what Stay really does:
It evokes the old-school smell of Gap Heaven, while giving it more depth and dimension. In other words, you can get the baby-soft, gonna-do-it urgency of your teen years, without the sugared predictability - and one note whiff - of the earlier version.
Revolutionary? No. Really easy to wear? Yes. And if you're really picky, you can layer this scent with others for a more unique formula - we recommend our old standby, Stella McCartney perfume, which seriously goes with everything.
