It's almost the weekend. Here are five songs to help you celebrate.
The Strange Boys - "Be Brave"
In case you haven't gotten the memo, Austin is hoppin' these days. (And just in time for SXSW!) Leading the pack: White Denim, Woven Boys, Harlem, and the Strange Boys. Here's one from the latter, that makes the sort of jangly, feel-good garage rock that could only be spawned under the Texas sun.
Savoir Adore - "Bodies"
It's taken too long for this Brooklyn boy-girl band to get the high-fives they deserve (their debut LP, In the Wooded Forest, dropped last fall last year on Cantora Records, home of MGMT's first EP). Perhaps that's because their sound is a deceivingly simple one—no bells, no whistles, just irresistibly melodic indie pop.
Smoke Fairies - "Gastown"
Jack White is such a fan of this London country-folk duo, that he produced two of their new singles for his Third Man Records imprint. "Gastown," one of the aforementioned songs, a harmonic hymn that's best crooned around an campfire in the Appalachians.
Solid Gold - "Danger Zone"
The macho/possibly homoerotic Kenny Loggins song from Top Gun gets an impressive electro-soul do-over from the Minneapolis-based Solid Gold. Well done, Midwest! (Thanks to NYLON's Samantha Gilewicz for the tip-off.)
Javelin - "Oh Centra"
Imagine Alvin and the Chipmunks doing an '80s synth-rap over jaunty beats: "I'll keep you inside like a concubine/But the loving's really free it's always on our mind." Sold!
