In 1976, there was Dorothy Hamill. In 1992, there was Kristi Yamaguchi. In 2002, there was Sarah Hughes.
Will 2010 be the year of Rachael Flatt?
We’ll find out later this week, when the figure skater takes to the rink at the Vancouver Winter Olympics. In between practicing her triple axels, the California-born, Colorado-based athlete talked to NYLON about partnering with MAC Cosmetics and laughing at Will Ferrell.
How did you get hooked up with MAC?I had used various MAC products when I began experimenting with makeup for competitions, and my agent, Tara Modlin, pursued the interest. So, now I have a partnership with MAC, which is very cool!
Are there any makeup tricks you picked up from skating that you use in your daily beauty routine? In order to keep eye makeup from melting away during a workout, I use waterproof mascara and eyeliner, which was introduced to me during a competition.
How do you keep your skin moisturized, despite spending hours on the ice?Lots of lotion and chapstick! I also drink a lot of water, so that really helps to flush out toxins and keep my skin clear.
Any style icons when it comes to putting together an outfit for the rink?Well, typically I don’t try to emulate someone’s style for a training day, because I normally throw clothes in my bag as I am heading out the door at 6 am! A normal practice outfit consists of black pants (they are very tight and stretchy like leggings) and a comfortable sportswear top. I use a lot of layers, so I can peel them off as I progress through my training sessions.
This is your first trip to the Olympics—what are you most looking forward to?I still have to earn my spot at the upcoming US Championships, so I need to skate very well in order to beat out several past US Champions such as Sasha Cohen, Mirai Nagasu, and Alissa Czisny. [Editor’s note: After emailing us back, Rachael not only earned a spot on the US Olympic team, but placed first at the US Championships.]
But, if I make the Olympic Team, it will be incredibly exciting! As for my favorite aspect of the Olympics: the opening ceremonies are one of the most awe-inspiring moments of the Olympics because they bring everyone together from all parts of the world.
What’s your all-time favorite ice skating movie?Tough call between
Blades of Glory (they certainly hit a lot of the nuances of the skating world) and
The Cutting Edge! They are two very funny movies, so it is difficult to pick one or the other.
