In some circles, you haven't achieved rock stardom until Courtney Love has something to say about you. So consider Lissie Trullie ordained: In February, when the singer's leather jacket rock EP, Self Taught Learner, was winning comparisons to albums by the Strokes and Television, Love chimed in with praise written in ALLCAPS on Trullie's MySpace page. The rest of the world followed.
Having earned her stripes in Manhattan's club scene by DJing at the Beatrice Inn and paling around with Chloe Sevigny and photographer Ryan McGinley, Trullie quickly attracted and eclectic - and eccentric - fan base. "In Vancouver, a 60-year-old woman came to see me," she recalls. "They know more about my life than I do!" Though she used to get recognized as the face of MDLR, the fashion line of Oscar de la Renta's son, Moises, she's now known for her classically cool music, all tensely wired guitar hooks and sandpapery vocals. No wonder The Smiths' guitarist Johnny Marr also digs her stuff.
"My producer Bernard [Butler, formerly of Suede] brought me this 12-string, and when I was done playing it, he was like, 'That's Johnny Marr's guitar.' I almost died."
