FIRST LOOK: OLSENBOYE

FIRST LOOK: OLSENBOYE

Mary-Kate and Ashley went to New York City and all they got me was this clothing line.

Before they started dancing on tables, dying their hair blue, and dressing in layer upon layer of shaggy sweaters, Mary-Kate and Ashley were known as the Olsen Twins, a duo whose dimpled cheeks and saucer-size blue eyes were the epitome of all-American wholesomeness.

So you could say that Olsenboye is a return to their roots. The new collection from the stylish sisters, sold exclusively at JC Penney, is a step away from lines like Elizabeth & James and The Row. Everything from faded denim jackets and hot pink miniskirts to lace-up boots and safety pin-covered saddle bags have made it into the spring ’10 lookbook. It’s not quite downtown cool or uptown chic, but there’s something to be said for shrunken blazers and plaid skirts all priced under $50.

Though it’s a far cry from the clothes that make up their current wardrobe, there’s a very specific inspiration for Olsenboye; every season brings the duo to a new city. This spring centers around New York City, home to NYU and a Starbucks on every corner (not to mention Canal Street, which sells Stephen Sprouse for Louis Vuitton knock-offs that look remarkably similar to one of Olsenboye’s graphic tees). They haven’t announced what cities are up next, but we can guess what San Francisco will look like—just watch Full House reruns on TV for a hint.

Kate

12/14/2009

I expected better. I like a few of the skirts but they're nothing new. The only piece I really love and want is the pink and white striped top.

I just want to know why?

allie

12/14/2009

i just think this was a business move for them. fashion-conscious adults are not really the target audience.

camila

12/14/2009

I expected better...looks kinda cheap to me, and I really like the way they dress

caitie

12/14/2009

i was really expecting better. it's not anything that really isn't already out there. elizabeth and james always have beautiful clothes. boo.

LO

12/14/2009

I think that it's cute. Obviously the people who are buying this line are probably not going to be the same people buying their Elizabeth & James line. I think that this is their attempt to appeal to a larger group of people. I'm not gonna lie, I'm not hating it.

Sadly, I have to agree... I wasn't impressed. I was expecting something fashion-forward, but it looks like mk & ashley took two steps backward. I don't feel NY inspired when I look at these clothes. Hopefully next season's line will show a better resemblence to its city.

12/15/2009

Mary-Kate and Ashley would never wear those outfits. I love MK, but face it - Full House was a dumb show.

Daphne

12/15/2009

i really like this collection. can't wait for the launch. I love the hippe/boho/indie look that the olsens do sometime rock well, so i think good on them for making a supr cute teen line.

love it!! i just hope they havent forgotten to include extended sizes for plus size girls:/

It looks like they cut out pieces from a Spring/Summer '05 Urban Outfitters catalog and put them on employees from American Eagle. FAIL

If i wan't the Olsens and I just saw it at JCPenny I'd proabably still like some of it. Like that pink skirt is so cute and I love the blazer and blue plaid skirt. Plus the whole basing the collection on different cities is genius. And yeah the graphic tee is a LV. thing but it works for this

ANNIE

12/15/2009

it's not what i expect friend from the Olsens. i find, it's very different from their own lines but since the collection is for JCPenny, it seems to fit. i wish they would do a line with something like H&M where their personal styles could be expressed more.

Natalie

12/16/2009

I completely agree w/ Lo. They are trying to appeal to a different priced crowd and I love the idea of young girls who cannot spend $400 on a skirt to be able to enjoy clothes for a lower price. Good thinking MK & Ash..and god job.. xo Nat.

rachel

12/16/2009

most of this is very JC-Penny-esque but the skirt in slides 4 and 6 are amazing... might have to brave the nearest JC Penny to get one

courtnee

12/16/2009

they dress better than they design. i'm so tired of seeing peace signs on everything. this was uneeded.

teatharaphy

12/16/2009

i wouldnt pay $20 for any of these

britttany

12/17/2009

big fail. was expecting more from them. love their personal style though.

Anne

12/17/2009

Ugh I know, what's with the PEACE SIGNS man??? If this "olsenboye" (come on, seriously??) line was really designed by dear mk & ash, I'm going to start questioning who designed the ridiculous and beautiful Elizabeth and James and The Row lines...(probably not be mk&a). Just embarrassing, sorry.

It's ok if you're 12 years old. Never thought the olsen twins were fashion "icons" anyway. Who in showbiz is in a day where everyone hires a stylist - give me a break!

Elizabeth

12/17/2009

just because they're back to designing for "tweens" doesn't mean they had to lose all sense of taste & elegance. i'm disappointed.

Amanda

12/21/2009

leonora

very disappointing there is absolutely no innovation here i was expecting more nice try

kat

01/03/2010

please, people. if you didn't know this was the twins' line and saw a girl wearing something like this on the streets you'd call it fabulous.

steohanie

02/13/2010

bad bad bad..i love mk and ashley, but this is just disapointing. they say that its a style that any girl would wear, but i bet you a hundred bucks that ashely or mk would not wear theyre own brand. they are not realizing that other people have good fashion sense too. just because im not a billion air doesnt mean i have to wear crappy clothes.

Steph

02/24/2010

I don't care about MK and Ashley. Those two both drink (drinking can cause cancer it was on the news) and smoke cigars. I don't care for them. Why support someone when, the money your giving them is going to something bad.

03/23/2010

Well I do have to say that these clothes are way better than Miley Cyrus :-O clothes she makes, because they are only in 2 colors and that is BLACK and PURPLE. Olsenboye clothes are not dark! I LOVE EM! :-)

09/17/2010

Love it, considering it is a cost conscious teen line for JC penny, it is pretty amazing. Obviously The Row and Elizabeth and James are more high end but so are thier price tags. Keep doing what u are doing Ash and MK, Full House ROCKS like their style aesthetic.
