This year has yielded a handful of supergroups - notably the Dead Weather and Monsters of Folk. But none is more curious than Discovery, the R&B - pop - reggae - rap project (which percolated over three years) from Vampire Weekend instrumentalist Rostam Batmanglij and Ra Ra Riot singer Wes Miles.
"I think there was a distinct desire to make songs like what was on the radio," says Batmanglij, who cites Usher's Confessions as a key influence. So, armed with synths, Auto-Tune, and a smattering of guests including Dirty Projector's Angel Deradoorian, they created LP. An indie album with major smarts, it celebrates the duo's unironic, inprejudiced, unabashed love of Top 40 music.
