JOIN THE GANG

Do some knitting DIY... without grandma.

What can Natalie Portman and your grandma do that you can’t?  They can make a scarf, a hat, or a very embarrassing Christmas sweater out of some needles and a ball of yarn.

If you don’t know how to knit, chances are you’ve given it a shot or at least fantasized of making a perfect infinity scarf.  Either way, you’re in luck: We come bearing a secret tool that does not require a five hour date with Grammy.

Wool and the Gang, the luxe knit company famed for their high quality Peruvian wools, recently added a number of video tutorials to their website for both amateur and professional knitters. Running under two minutes each, the complimentary lessons range from the most basic (i.e. “casting on with two needles”) to the very intimidating (i.e. “the ladder stitch”).   Besides being instructive, the videos have a soothing, Zen-like appeal. Plus, we’re curious if you can place the instructor’s mysterious accent.

For the first-time knitter, we suggest a chunky yarn paired with a larger needle, which makes it easier to catch mistakes as they occur.  Also, before investing in Wool & Gang’s pure baby Alpaca yarn (which runs about $30 a ball), check out the budget-friendly selection at KnitPicks.com...just in case this turns out like your 5th grade violin stint.

Knitting and crochet are definitely becoming hobbies and side job opportunities for many people now. Being a "young" knitter and crocheter, I'm definitely aiming to show people that it's not just a "little old ladies'" pastime. This ain’t nana’s couch (love you nana!)... ^_^.

I don't think there is anything more original that making your own clothing and accessories. We all want to be different and express ourselves in unique ways. There is something really cool about wearing a hat, scarf or gloves or whatever that you've made yourself and no one else has. Is there any downside to DIY?

Accent: Swiss-Deutch? Austrian? With an influence from Australia/NZ - the "don't".
