Die! Die! Die! - “Sideways Here We Come”There’s something brewing in New Zealand these days—see Surf City, Bang Bang Eche—as evidenced by this punky trio that just played a raucous set at this year’s CMJ Festival. Analog hero Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies) produced their debut (though this explosive, ooh-ing cut is off their follow-up), which is endorsement enough, if you ask us.
Fanfarlo - “The Walls Are Coming Down”Fanfarlo—the London band founded by Simon Balthazar, a Swede—is a trumpet-and-mandolin-wielding group that makes majestic, throwback music. We’d be skeptical, too, if this didn’t mean that their compositions lie pleasantly between the work of David Byrne and Beruit.
The Raincoats - “Don’t Be Mean”These punk-grrrl pioneers beloved by Kurt Cobain and Sleater-Kinney alike just swung through New York City for a sold-out show. This no-BS track is a percussive, sharp-edged lesson in manners.
Little Girls - "What We Did"Not to be confused with San Francisco's lo-fi, dreamy popsters
Girls, Toronto's Little Girls make fuzzed-out, punk-inflected tunes that should soundtrack a renegade surfing movie. The beat-driven "What We Did" could very well be the awesome B-side that Wavves never recorded.
Cold Cave - "Life Magazine"Here's an electro-thumper that we're sorta bummed isn't a wistful paean to the periodical of yore. But they're forgiven: "Life Magazine" is a propulsive number that smartly captures the Philly-based Cold Cave's cool, pop/goth-lite predispositions.
