DRINK IT OFF

DRINK IT OFF

Beauty masks you can make at the bar.

Alcohol is known as a party starter and a pain eraser, but can it also be a skincare ingredient?

In her new book Return to Beauty, Narine Nikogosian uses gin, vodka, and beer alongside the oatmeal, yogurt, and honey ingredients seen in typical DIY recipes.  It’s kind of counterintuitive, as we’ve all heard about the damage drinking does to our skin. But Nikogosian, skin care consultant for Jessica Alba and Charlize Theron, claims alcohol’s antiseptic and tightening properties make effective toners, masks and moisturizers. Apparently, pouring your next shots into the mixing bowl will renew your skin.

The book names its spiked recipes things like Wickedly Wonderful Watermelon Toner and Hopped-Up Sweet Potato Mask.  But can you sacrifice your martini ingredients for a beauty experiment?

This sounds absolutely yummy! And it does make sense. Almost like when people say milk is bad for your skin when you drink it but when you dab it on your face it tightens and the enzymes treat your skin great.

Milk and yogurt are exceptional for your skin whether you eat it, drink it or put it on your skin. In the summer time, if you get a sunburn, plain yogurt will nourish your skin a thousand times better than aloe. Reason being, your skin is dehydrated and needs the moisture & nutrients. Alcohol is very dehydrating (reason for your hang-over) so I could see it being good for Oily skin, but not on a regular daily basis.

Ugh- this would only make you age faster. Alcohol is very dehydrating, just like blondie pointed out. Even oily skin shouldn't use it though, it'll zap moisture from the deeper layers of your skin. You know how your esthetician says you have dehydrated skin? It's because your skin is dehydrated in the dermis-the deeper layers of skin. If your dermis isn't plump and juicy and happy, it can't support your epidermis (the skin you can see) as you get older, and your skin will sag faster as it loses elasticity. Alcohol isn't a chemical exfoliant, either, so using it as a toner is counter productive because your moisturizer is only going to sit on the surface of your skin, and not only will your dermis be wishing it was hydrated enough to cry, but the dead dried skin cells from the alcohol are going to be chilling on top of your pores, and eventually you'll see a couple of nasty red friends having a pizza party on your face. Moral of the story, STAY AWAY FROM ALCOHOL BASED SKIN CARE!!!!

^ What he just said. I once read an article about alcohol-based skin care, and let's just say, it didn't turn out well for both parties... Dee - http://woodworkingplansdiy.org
