Five songs to play on repeat during the long weekend.
YACHT - "Psychic City (Voodoo City)"
YACHT, a David Byrne-loving synth-pop twosome (with an album out on DFA records), just scored the opening slot for a handful of YYYs dates. Well done, and well deserved! Those not familiar with their stuff might want to give this chanty ditty with a sly groove a whirl. You'll be hooked.
The Ettes - "No Home"
You'll have to wait till September 29 to get your paws on the new CD from The Ettes (who also composed some girl-positive tunes for the upcoming drew Barrymore roller-derby movie, Whip It!). So why not whet your appetite with this new crunchy, thumping, oooh-ing song, which was recorded and mixed by the everything-he-touches-is-awesome Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys?
Washed Out - "You'll See It"
A blog discovery from Georgia-based Ernest Green rekindles our best memories of Ride and St. Etienne. It's also an essential track for your end-of-summer BBQ.
Treetop Flyers - "Mountain Song"
This bears no relation to the Jane's Addiction druggie song. Instead, these soulful U.K. roots rockers have crafted a lament enveloped in gorgeous harmonies about a woman "from behind the mountain."
Beck (with members of MGMT, Wolfmother, and LIttle Joy) - "Suzann" (Leonard Cohen cover)
Let's be honest, covering the legendary poet-folkie Leonard Cohen is a daunting task. But Beck Hansen admirably continues to cover the greats as part of his online Record Club series—he previously recruited friends to take on some Velvet Underground & Nico tracks—with this stripped-down singalong.
