While NYLON TV’s Band Crush
is on hiatus, we’ll still be bringing you more of the groups dominating our headphones. This week, meet The Drums:From the Beach Boys to Best Coast, California bands tend to have a monopoly on dreamy surf-pop. But Brooklyn’s The Drums is looking to change all that.
The two-piece, supplemented live by a backing band, sings about high tide and heartbreak over instantly catchy melodies. Though there are traces of ‘80s post-punk in the songs—“I Felt Stupid” pays homage to both the lilting vocals and echoing keyboards of The Cure—there’s no doubt that this is a sundrenched band.
But just how songs like “Down by the Water,” “Submarine,” and “Let’s Go Surfing,” entered The Drum’s East Coast-based vernacular gets a bit clearer once you learn more about the band. Jonathan Pierce and Jacob Graham, who both hail from the Sunshine State, Florida, first met at summer camp. Just as their friendship spans state lines and school years, their music spans eras and coasts.
Though their debut full-length won’t be ready until early 2010, the band’s aptly-titled EP
Summertime! came out earlier this month. Consider it an upbeat way to ease into fall - and a far cheaper alternative to planning a trip to Santa Monica.
