Five tunes you can't go the weekend without listening to.
Black Devil Disco Club - "hfriend"
French producers Bernard Fevre and Jackie Giordano created this dark-disco group back in the late ’70s. In "hfriend," they get tribal vibes to make nice with drowned-out vocals and a propulsive, synth beat. (A big high-five to Apache Beat's Ilirjana Alushaj for this fine recommendation.)
Hanne Hukkelberg - "Blood From a Stone"
Possessing an agile voice that can be both emphatic and vulnerable, the Norwegian singer would do Feist proud with this buoyant track.
Rodriguez - "Sugar Man"
Detroit troubador Rodriguez (whose work has recently been re-released by Barsuk records) has composed a trove of gorgeous, stripped-down tunes over the years. Your heart will turn to mush while listening to this one.
Starfucker - "Medicine"
Staccato synths introduce this dreamy little tune with a killer hook. It's a fool-proof upper for when you're down.
T.I.T.S. - "Mystery"
In recent interviews, the band Girls have been giving their naughty-named compadres in T.I.T.S. shoutouts. We wholeheartedly support this! Imagine if the Bela Lugosi of Bauhaus fame did the horizontal tango with anyone in Black Sabbath circa ’70...
