Bringing back the Automat...
Hardly camouflaged against the dark charms of St. Mark’s Place is the neon pink portal, BAMN! In the early 1900s, hundreds of Automats like this one were sprinkled throughout the city stocked with everything from Snickers to casseroles, but the likes of McDonald's saw a swift end to the dinner-for-a-dollar deal. BAMN! owners Nobu X and David Leong, however, are on a mission to bring them back. “It's a great delivery system for fresh and tasty foods, and has a rich and fun history,” explains Nobu. “I wanted the atmosphere to be an extension of your living room, an extension of the club you just came out of, an extension of your friend's party… ” With cooks behind the, er, glass doors whipping up mini teriyaki burgers, pork buns, and mac-and-cheese croquets every 15 minutes, did someone say munchies?!
