Go to Saphir, Blizzarts, and Korova. Shop on St-Laurent and Mont Royal, especially Eva B, Goodfoot, OldGold, Moog Audio, and really anything on those streets. St-Catherine is mostly a waste of time except for Off The Hook and a few others. the SAT usually has interesting art shows and good music as well.

Here are the most amazing places to eat in Montreal. the best place is Santropol. The most amazing food and atmosphere. Try the no. 13 and a milkshake. Ghandi in old montreal for incredible indian food. Calories on st. catherines for mouth watering desserts and Rubens on st. catherines for the best smoked meat sandwich. They have the least fat and are so much better then the over hyped more famous option. Also check out Tam Tam's on the Mount on a warm sunday early afternoon. Bring your instruments.

Montreal is an amazing city with incredible festivals especially in summer: Jazz, outdoor concerts, incredible music scene (Arcade Fire, the best local band! as well as Metric). There is the mega shopping strip on Ste-Catherine street downtown populated by many clubs such as Seven, 1234, Club Opera near Crescent (the bar and nightlife street). There is the mega bookstore Chapters with millions of books and hundreds of magazines from around the globe on display. Just walking down the street, there are street artists with graffiti paintings and original costume jewelery. Of course, Montreal would not be Montreal if it were not for the multitude of restaurants owned by the diverse population of the city. One particularly famous one is Schwartz for its roast beef sandwiches. You are not a true Montrealer until you've tasted it. If you're lookin for some more high-end wardrobe finds, you can always hop by Green av (green for MONEY): Holt Renfrew (the canadian equivalent of Saks) is the main chi-chi chic destination. Want to see beautiful scenery? Hike around Mount-Royal in the middle-ish of the city and get an amazing postcard view of the crazy winding streets. There is too much to mention. Just walk around, occasionally take the metro, you'll get it all!

Defenitely check out Schwartz, that is a great idea. All the celebrity paraphernalia and originality deserve your attention. Also, a band you've probably heard of: Tegan & Sara, sisters who started out in Calgary and are now working out of Vancouver & Montreal...in the true Canadian way!

Montreal is a hundred times better than Toronto - all the culture is in Montreal, all the business in TO. I absolutely worship shopping on St-Laurent, Mont-Royal and St-Denis.. best vintage shops, restaurants, EVERYTHING! I wouldn't say avoid St-Catherines, though.. it's more tourist-y, but there are some wacky homeless people.. the shops aren't that great, though. Poutine's a must =D I love La Tulipe .. and best concert venues are Metropolis and Club Soda.. It's a shame you guys missed the summer, there are so man free festivals! Jazz fest, African nights, etc.. ah well. Love the mag.. give MTL the credit it deserves!

So glad your checking us out!...Montreal has this amazing music scene, with the same level of fantastic as Toronto's but with an added quirky, creaitive edge. There's of course Wolf Parade, The Arcade Fire, and so many others but if you want to dig deep down in the scene i suggest you check out The Hot Springs. They're this absolutly fabulous collection of engery and wit. I gurantee you can't resist to sway your hips.

Check out The Control Lab art galary at 3634 St Laurent. Also, the Mile End area around 5300 on St Laurent also has lots of great stores featuring local designers, like Boutique Finn, Morales, Adam & Eve, Local 23, General 54 etc...

LOCAL 23 on Bernard street between Saint Laurent Boulevard and Parc Avenue. An institution in the Mile End neighborhood. BARFLY on saint laurent boulevard just above Duluth street. Sunday night bluegrass bonanzas if you like hipsters in plaid shirts and urban cowboys and old white bearded men playing pool. Another institution here. Also recently voted 'best dive bar in canada'

Good choice - I've been living in Montreal for just over a year, and it is amazing. You'll be fine with only English, but French will definitely help you out. Friday nights at The Green Room (boul. St-Laurent, close to St-Viateur) will definitely be your scene. While you're up there, get yourselves to St-Viateur Bagels and gorge yourselves on legendary Montreal bagels - it's open 24hrs today, so no problem! Very recommended. A girl who DJs that night also does Sundays at Korova - I personally prefer the latter in terms of dancing, so if you wanna rip it up, check that out. Both these nights, as well as the bars Blizzarts and Saphir, often attract (and I hate to use this term, but it's more or less accurate here) quite the hipster crowd. La Banquise (on Rachel) does the best poutine in the city, and Memento (on St. Denis) is an excellently curated vintage store staffed entirely by grey-haired gentlemen with a great eye. While you're in the neighborhood of Memento, walk a little bit south down St. Denis and hang out around the fountain in Square St. Louis - that's where I live and love and park my bicycle. Oh, yes, and on that note: if the weather's good, and you want to see the city from the best possible angle, get theeselves some vélos and do as the locals do!

ALSO: I see in an above post that someone recommends a cute café at the corner of St. Laurent and St. Viateur. It IS cute, it IS vegetarian, and its name is actually Le Cagibi.

Don't forget to check out the east side of av des Pins. There are some great places between St. Laurent and St. Denis. Marche Montreal 24 av des pins est, Ko Clothes 58 des pins est, there's a great friperie (2nd hand clothes) at 145 des pins est and other clothing stores and 2nd hand record store on the same block. Whenever I go to a new city, I always investigate the side streets. I've found the best places that way!

Great local bands include Chinatown (myspace.com/chinatownfranco, if i don't give you the link you'll never find it!) and Duchess Says. Eat at Le Pistol (Sam Roberts' brother is co-owner, plus there's always great music from the employees' iPods), Patati Patata (the most amazing place! tiny and always crowded, but so cheap and worth the wait) both on St-Laurent, Nanta's Cash and Curry on Duluth is the BEST place, the menu changes a lot. Also Fuchsia on Duluth for great eats, and you want to check out Juliette et Chocolat on Laurier Est or St-Denis. Want a great haircut? Funky Toque or Pure Salon (part of Spa Diva) should do the trick. For shopping, Eva B, le Marché Montréal, Wooden Apples, Old Gold are great.

Is Rajni going? Tell her to go to St. Michel flea market (a bit of a journey, but full of insane kitsch) then sprawl out on the grass in Jeanne-Mance Park. Then text some friends to bring her a beer and food from Aux Vivres. Repeat. That's just how we roll.
