GET SHORTY

GET SHORTY

The crop top makes a comeback - are you ready to bare all?

It used to be hemlines that moved around; with every passing decade, skirts slowly inched up, first passing ankles, then knees, before finally grazing thighs. But by now, wearing a miniskirt is practically pedestrian, embraced by everyone from tweens at the mall to octogenarians at bingo night.

Instead, it’s a very different type of skin-baring outfit that draws stares: the crop top. A closet mainstay in the ‘90s, the ab-revealing top works for bad girls (think Alicia Silverstone in the video for Aerosmith’s “Crazy”) and good girls (think Alicia Silverstone as Cher in Clueless) alike. Now, with temperatures on the rise, the crop is on the verge of a major comeback.

Designers from Anna Sui to Cushnie et Ochs showcased their own versions of the belly shirt on the spring '09 runway, but we found a few more that make up for the lack of material with reasonable prices (and for your own at-home DIY, try chopping up your favorite oversize tees). There are even crop tops with detachable tanks underneath for those too modest to show a bit of skin all day.

Whether on the beach or at a Fourth of July BBQ, it’s one way to declare your independence—from stomach-covering clothes.

I like how they made a comeback :) People are very lucky if they can pull of this look. It's cute for the summer.

Eeeeekkkk! I don't know how I feel about this....it's like 1995 coming back to haunt us!

Kay

Definitely not. Sorry to sound harsh, but it's my experience that those who wish to show their midriff are the very people that don't realize that it is a gut they are showing instead. And really, who wants to see that?

NOnoNOnoNO... a thousand times over no. its ugly. i cannot stress that enough. it makes you look poor and to match your ill semse of style im sorry NO.

Why are the 90's so desperately trying to make a come back? Haven't we all established that was the worst dressed decade in history?? What the hell???

Liz

Don't give people the excuse to let their midriff show by claiming this is "in style." Pleaseeeee.

i like crop tops when they're paired with something to cover you up underneath. but all of these are bad examples... except for the RVCA

I love this look so much! But it depends on the person and body type having big boobs will no work for this look.

Hannah

i love this look, i don't think these are very good examples as you can find ones much better than these, but as a few people have said it does depend on the person, as does every other trend.

Sarah

Flabby stomachs ALREADY flop around everywhere! All women are beautiful and all, blah blah blah, don't get me wrong; but KNOW YOU ASSETS and cover your shiz up!

I am in the middle for this one... I bought a cropped tee from american apparel and I have still to make a public outing with it on. It is very flattering to the waist but yeh you have to be super toned for this trend

Zeni

oh please no...this has tacky written all over it. plus i've already seen lindsay lohan sporting this look. so thanks but no thanks.

I THINK CROP TOPS ARE THE BEST!! I JUST STARTED ROCKIN THEM AGAIN THIS SUMMER.HAVEN'T ROCKED ONE SINCE THE 90'S...I WAS LOOKING FOR A DIFFERENT LOOK THAN THE PAST COUPLE SUMMERS..I THOUGHT IT MIGHT MAKE ME LOOK TOO YOUNG BUT IN THE RIGHT PROPORTIONS YOU LOOK SEXY! YOU PROB SHOULDN'T PAIR THEM WITH CUTOFFS LOL AND THEN I WAS WATCHING OLD SATC EPISODES AND REALIZED THAT CARRIE AND SAM ROCK CROP TOPS ALLL THE TIME!

i absolutely love this look, but at the same time it can so seriously wrong if you dont know how to wear it, or if you cant pull it off the top should be paired with something high waisted, not low rising the model in the pictures with the super low black jeans looks ridiculous in what shes wearing, but ive seen people able to pull off this look. its really up to how you pull it off, and if youre in shape for it.

This gets a big no from me. Not only is seeing someone's belly outside of beach completely not appealing but these tops are so billowy! Even the super thin models look weird in them. I think shape is key and this is a shapeless mess.

the Amy Winehouse, much? i like the fluttery ones with chiffon, that's done right. but crop tops in general just don't look right on anyone walking down the street. the beach? totally.

Elizabeth

it has a potential, it think it depends on whose wearing it, you have to be able to pull it off

i can see these being okay on models in magazines, but if i ever saw someone wearing this, walking down the street, i'd have to laugh.. they're not falttering or appealing in any way.

Totally perfect for July 4th BBQ. And as an aside, I had when fashion trends are dictated by whether or not skinny people can wear them - if you've got the confidence to wear a crop top out, who cares how "toned" your abs are. Nylon has never been about body-hating, which is part of the reason why I read it.

Brianne

Well, I like it, but it depends on how you wear it. I blame S.Darko for sparking my interest in crop tops and cut-off levi shorts.

Alicia

After rewatching Dirty Dancing for the ump-teenth time, I became very excited about this new trend. However, I'm convinced it can only work with a high-waisted bottom. The belly button is a no no. I agree that there are some better examples out there. Like on the TopShop website.

Danielle

i love this look, but i really am sure i would not look nice or feel comfortable with wearing it. but i don't think it's a bad idea, if you can pull it off, go for it!
