BAND CRUSH: TY SEGALL

BAND CRUSH: TY SEGALL

New music that comes straight out of the garage - and possibly the '60s.

Black Eyed Peas may have the song of the summer (whether you like it or not), but the best new album of the season comes from a one-man band.

The guy in question is Ty Segall, a San Francisco psych-rocker who brings rock’n’roll back into the garage. While Segall’s been playing his brand of fuzzed-out music for a few years now, it’s his second album, Lemons, that solidifies his standing as one-to-watch.

In fact, from the first sound of drums crashing down in album opener “It #1” to the woozy last nights of closer “Like You”, there are few moments when Ty Segall isn’t irresistibly catchy. “Can’t Talk” will either have you up and dancing like it’s still the ‘60s, or running to pick-up your guitar and play along; “Die Tonight” is the perfect dirty-rock partner to Crocodiles’ “I Wanna Kill”; “Rusted Dust” could have been a Nirvana song if Kurt Cobain was more into The 13th Floor Elevators than The Raincoats.

If it sounds like Segall’s gotten a bit louder this summer, it might be the extra sets of hands helping him out—he’s added both a bassist and drummer to his line-up. But if you see a few more heads onstage when you check him out this summer don’t be confused; those are just fans rushing the stage. No, we won’t judge if you’re among them.
