Models-turned-designers is nothing new - Kimora Lee Simmons and her Baby Phat empire may be the best example, but there's more: Thomas Wylde designer Paula Thomas used to pose for Gaultier, Milla Jovovich had her first sample for Jovovich Hawk manufactured by Miuccia Prada, and let's not forget the explosion of Kate Moss for TopShop - or the invasion of Erin Wasson for RVCA.
Now another mannequin joins their ranks, after almost ten years on the runways. Her name is Katerena Alkhimova, and after starring as a campaign face for Versace and walking for Dior legend John Galliano, she asked him for a different kind of job - working as his assistant.
John gave her the gig, and under his tutelage she learned production, fabric sourcing, branding, and all the fun stuff you don't see on Project Runway. Now, Katerena launches her first clothing line, called Basics by Kat.
Designed for off-duty models (and wannabes), the range has just two pieces: a body-sylphing sheath dress and matching body suit, designed to shape every woman's torso into a bit more of a "model" shape.
It's definitely a nod to Kat's Versace days, but not completely: unlike her luxury clients, she's priced both pieces between $100 - $200 - well below the $10,000 that some of Kat's contemporaries require just to show up for a photo shoot.
