“It’s what’s inside that counts,” is an adage often heard, but rarely followed—and one that I couldn’t help think about when I first saw Smashbox’s new summer collection, Untamed.

The set features lip glosses, cream blushes, waterproof eyeliners, and an eye brightener in animal-print packaging. Think lots of tiger stripes menacingly zig-zagging across tubes and shadow quads. It’s definitely the wildest packaging I’ve seen all season, but made me worried that girls who prefer a more natural look would be left to fend for themselves.

And that’s where I was wrong. The set is surprisingly low-key, featuring classic shades and looks-good-on-everyone colors. The blendable blushes give you a natural glow, the cream shadows are all neutrals, and the two lip glosses add a bit of color without too much shine. And if you’re going on a safari anytime soon, all you need to pack is the double-ended eye brightener for instant no-fuss eyes.

So, yes, Untamed has a wild side to it; but get beyond the hard shell and you’ve got a surprisingly soft, tame center - and a killer makeup palette to boot.
