COCKTAIL HOUR

COCKTAIL HOUR

Becoming a hair product mix master just got easier.

Ask any beauty pro and they’ll tell you that most products are meant to be mixed. Lip color? Layer your favorite MAC shimmer over your stand-by Benefit red shade. Perfume? Spritz some Stella over your Daisy.

But combining hair products always proves to be a bit trickier; get the proportions wrong and you could be left with flakes, flyaways, or frizz. It’s something that Umi Products has spent a lot of time considering. The brand—a spin-off from the Boston-based salon—designed their minimalist products with the intention of cocktailing. Although stylists knew how to layer them, it seemed that their customers—aka real women—couldn’t quite become mix masters.

So they’ve made it even easier to find that perfect combo with the release of their Umi Kits. Each box includes one of their six signature cocktail duos—one tackles curly hair, another gives you volume, a third extends your blowouts—along with instructions on how to mix them. While there’s been some debate in the NYLON office over procedure (some of us mixed the two parts in our hand before coating our locks, while others applied the products separately), the results are quite impressive if you strike the right balance.

They’ll be available mid-February, which leaves you plenty of time to start playing around with the products you’ve already got on hand. Just remember: cocktail responsibly.

This is great! It is so hard to not only find products that work, but ones that mix well together to do what you want like in the salons. It took me years to figure out what products work with my hair and how to mix them in order to achieve the look I want. Though I've found the products, and cocktails that I love, these products sound so amazing and innovative that I'd absolutely have to try it...come a week from now I will be looking for this. Thanks!
