After enduring nearly fifty years of Vespa rides, punk shows, and all-night parties, the iconic boots are getting a very fashionable makeover. Vivienne Westwood, Preen, Rick Owens, and a handful of other big name designer have used the company’s classic 1460 kicks (named after the label’s April 1 launch in 1960) as a blank canvas, deconstructing and redefining the cherry red eight-lace shoe.
While you can’t actually purchase the one-of-a-kind marabou-festooned or porno-covered boots, you can check out all 69 designs on Dr. Martens' special 1460 website
and purchase the originals online
. Or you could make like Kurt Cobain and Joe Strummer and DIY your own Docs—note that Sharpies and glue gun for personalization not included.
