THE INSIDER: WHITNEY PORT

THE INSIDER: WHITNEY PORT

Talking fashion with MTV's newest reality princess.

Whitney Port has an imminent show on MTV, a new clothing line, and perfect hair.  NYLON calls the Manhattan transfer and asks, is this too good to be true?

Hellooo Whitney.  Hello, NYLON!

Everyone knows about your TV show, but you've also got a new clothing line?  Yes it’s called Whitney Eve, which are my first and middle name.

Why?  Here’s the deal, like, I wanted my name to be part of the line, and I didn’t want to let my job situation tell the story for me, but at the same time, I wanted to put my brand on it.  So I figured my first and middle name, if I did that, it would be personal enough without being so connected to what people think they know about me.

This might sound harsh, but why do we need another celebrity clothing line?  Because in California, at least, everyone’s wearing the same thing.  Everyone’s got this lifestyle where all you see is trends.  And I thought if I could bring a California style that was more unique, and more based on a vintage aspect, then women would feel a little bit different.  It’s hard to use such generic words; I’m sure everyone feels their clothes are unique and different.  But I’ve played off a lot of vintage pieces and fabrics and patterns that I’ve seen through shopping.  Most of my pieces are vintage but sometimes you want the same attention to detail and the same variety in a department store.

Most girls are very curious about your wardrobe.  If you couldn’t wear any Whitney Eve clothes, what would you wear?  I love Manoush but it’s so "little girl" sometimes… and I really like what Phillip Lim has done, but my closet is all dresses from different walks of life.

You said you didn’t want your “job situation” to be part of the equation, but surely, you must have learned something from The Hills and from People’s Revolution that’s helped?  It’s more logistics – how to shoot a look book, or like, how to make your line cohesive.  But style-wise, it all came from within. I’ve never used my job to learn how to design clothes; it’s just the business part of it.

Gossip time – what will happen to you in New York?!  I mean, I think everything’s kind of in the works right now.  I’ll be there for Fashion Week, and possibly after.  And that’s all I can say!

diana

12/22/2008

this line is WAY over-priced and totally not cute. that is far from vintage inspired. this sucks :( !

Maddie

12/22/2008

There's nothing new or exciting in that collection.

Carly

12/22/2008

I really like the clothing line (MUCH better than Lauren Conrad's), however I'm not a fan of those prices. As far as the show goes, I always liked Whitney so I'll definitely give it a chance.

12/22/2008

well, i like her. i dont particularly like the hills, but i do like whitney and lauren. they seem down to earth. gosh i would die for their jobs. the show would be better if it were more real. i dont like the planned conversations and such. it must be weird for them to repeat real life situations. anyways these clothes are alright. i was expecting a more vintage feel..and the colors seem more new york and less cali. well good luck girly.

Alexis

12/22/2008

i like the clothes, but they're hardly affordable.

modesto

12/22/2008

was her muse LC? everythign looks liek somethign she already wore on the hills.

sheena

12/22/2008

honestly.. i graduated FiDM right before the whole Hills thing started.. and as i do love Whitney more than the others.. I hate how they make it so damn easy to just "POOF i wanna start a line today.." call me a hater, but this struggling art kid has a chip on her shoulder.. ;) i love the ruffles tho... not gonna lie.

seriously?! having a show is fine. these days, anyone can have there own reality show; that's not even something special anymore; but that clothing line is ridiculous! the clothes are normal; nothing spectacular, new, or innovative. they're just nice. i could find them anywhere, and for a lower price for sure! i like whittney more than any other of the hills girls (besides LC) and i wish her luck. especially in the design aspect of her clothing line.

keiry

12/22/2008

the whole show thing is overrated, but ok. really i thought her clothing line would be alot better sinc i love how she dresses. it looks like mall cheap stuff.

arekay

12/22/2008

just because you can afford expensive clothes and think you're trendy doesn't mean you have an eye for fashion, leave it for real and upcoming designers.

Taryn

12/22/2008

It really bothers me that because people are on tv suddenly they can be designers or singers or whatever. Being famous doesn't suddenly make you good at everything. I'm guessing there are a billion budding designers who could come up with something way more interesting than this line who just don't get a shot because they aren't being spoiled drama queens on tv. That being said the line is cute but way over priced

candice

12/22/2008

its not that its bad. its just been before. and before. and before that. nothing new that makes me double take

S

12/22/2008

Terrible! So not original, all the girls on the hills are stupid.

zooeygrace

12/22/2008

Well i must say, Whitney has always been my favorite, but this clothing line looks really plain and uncreative. (Lauren's doesnt impress me either) As for the show, I'm glad they've decided to show us the NY scene, a good change of pace from the typical Cali drama.

Anna

She sucks. Period.

jaime

12/22/2008

well atleast her clothes look way better than lauren conrads over-priced target look-a-like clothes. and plus whitney to me was always the one with more style TEAM WHITNEY xoxox

Wow this line does not have a uniform idea- too random and not flatter on the model's figures...might I add- definitely over-priced. She shouldn't have a designer label wasting money to make these clothes- they look like they're from Smitten by Sarah Jessica Parker for Steve & Barry's!!! ekkk

laura

this looks like stuff you can get at FOREVER 21.

lisa g.

nothing forever21 can't whip up. there's a huge diff. btwn styling and CREATING. huge.

Jeanette

12/22/2008

I like Whitney's personal style, but I'm not a fan of this clothing line. To me it looks like a fashion school student made the pieces. Especially the way they fit. Not flattering at all. Maybe Whitney should stay doing PR, or styling vs. designing. I'm giving her a 2 for effort :)

i'm not harsh to normal people, but when every reality star thinks they know how to do something better than people that have been working their whole lives to do it, it annoys me. she should at least own up to the fact that she is there because of the reality show. god she didn't even know the name of a designer when she interviewed at teen vogue. she's like the boring paris hilton. i'm sure the people at nylon could come up with a better clothing line, because you're all talented. why does some rich, preppy, cali, sheltered girl get to do it. shame on you nylon. find some real talent. and maybe someone that doesn't say "like" in every sentence.

12/22/2008

"um, lyk, omg!" really, whitney would be TWICE as sophisticated if she went to see a speech specialist. the "likes" bug me so much...but that's towards anyone who uses that word in general. but that line of clothing...she calls it unique? really it isn't. sorry whitney. but, i do believe whitney is not as spoiled as lauren, and actually, she can work hard. sure, she did go to FIDM, but really, she's only PR for DVF. let some people who actually want to design their own line as a living have a chance...

lou

12/22/2008

boring!

erin

12/22/2008

what is up with these fug back zippers? they are everywhere these days... and her fabric choices make me want to puke.

LOL

12/22/2008

I'D LIKE TO PORK WHITENY PORT

Dana

12/22/2008

Whitney Port is young and dumb. The country is in a major recession....what girl would buy these ridiculously priced clothes. Forever 21 already carries this crap. There is nothing new about it.

LOLA

12/22/2008

Okay, maybe ONE thing in this line is cute - but it's 500 dollars!? No way! I'd never buy it, I love her and everything, but come on - I'm sure she could make more better, affordable clothes! These things look like bad quiality fabric.

Anne

12/22/2008

I like Whitney but the line isn't that great. It kind of looks cheap but is totally expensive.

Abrielle

12/22/2008

What the heck?! She has great style and I'm excited for her show....but the clothes!!!! THEY SUCK...so ugly and overpriced...

Abby

12/22/2008

She's lovely and she's never used anything except her style and her niceness on TV - unlike a lot of awful people who just want to be famous. I love Whitney!

Em

12/22/2008

I like the dresses, and bonus points for using diverse models. Whitney's just following her dreams. Why would we be down on that?

Zoe

12/22/2008

I like her. I like her style. I'll at least look at the clothes in person before judging. TEAM WHITNEY!

fauxcialite

12/22/2008

This is cute. Whitney's got her head on straight for sure. But if Olivia Palermo launches a clothing line, I swear I'll scream.

Tasha

12/22/2008

I like what Em said. Why not cheer a girl on for doing what she dreams?

Donna

12/22/2008

TEAM W. But I wish she'd punch out Spencer Pratt.

Jessicarose

12/23/2008

ya know, she was my favorite girl on The Hills and I'm excited to see her show but some of her clothes are cute but some of them just look cheap and stupid.

anabanana

12/23/2008

the fabric and cuts look bad together.. audrina stuff looks better and she didn't even go to fashion school yeah i thought whitney was the smart one on this show.. and as for being vintage inspired maybe just on the lace ruffles.. the zipper on the gray dress not cute.. kitson well probaly drop this line just like overpriced LC. I can go on forever..

Juliana

12/23/2008

She's so lame, and these clothes are last season ridiculous. Get out of our lives.

Juliana

Terri

12/23/2008

Whitney on the show seems sweet and all but... ugh no thanks on these designs! Uninspired designs, poor fabric choices. They don't seem worth the prices.

ANTONIA

12/23/2008

i'm no fashion expert but i do have seamstresses in my family and these clothes don't look flattering at all despite the fact that they're being modelled on a slim model. it's also quite clear that the 'whitney eve' line would not exist if she hadn't been a part of the hills. shame how such talent can struggle and desperados can flourish. and what's with the price? i think it's better to start out small and don't price yourself in a league of talented, established designers. it seems to be more convenience and luck rather than passion. and can she please stop saying 'LIKE' - it lacks sophistication and intelligence and looks bad to perspective buyers. kudos to her... but come on, this is bullshit.

meghan

12/23/2008

i like whitney, she's alright. the sequin dress is cute, but $500?? then again, elizabeth&james had a similar dress last year going for the same price, so maybe it's not that ridiculous. everything else is kind of boring but either way, i think whitney's line is about 100x better than lauren's, and she definitely has potential for the future.

Annabella

12/23/2008

Wow those clothes are awful, and already been done. If she wants to be a fashion designer try something new. BTW Too much money for....um...CRAP

jessica

12/23/2008

too expensive for clothes that look like you can buy at forever 21.

Heather

12/23/2008

These clothes are nothing new. They look the same as anything else in demand right now. Maybe California is different? Still the prices are ridiculous! They look like $20 dresses from Forever 21~! Just because shes on "The Hills" she gets her own clothing line!!??!?!?!?!? That is such bull. Spoiled bitches.

Alexa

12/23/2008

Looks like Whitney's just as deluded and dumb as LC and every other wannabe loser on the hills. No you're not a designer, no you're not interesting and both Whitney and LC looked to forever 21 wayyyyyy to much for inspiration. The line is gross, the show will probably as irrelevant if not more so than the hills. So funny how these famewhores just wont give up!

AMBER

12/23/2008

Way to expensive for plain Jane clothes. If I'm going to pay that much for clothes, they are unique, and made of quality fabric. The only outfit I liked out of the whole thing was the blue shirt and brown skirt combo. It actually wasn't overpriced... Everything looked like something you could buy at the mall...not impressed. (The back zipper??)

Amber

12/23/2008

She should have just done a line with Target or Forever 21 with cheaper prices, then people would actually buy this stuff.

Vanessa

12/23/2008

What is up with the large only sizes from revolve clothing? Those pieces are the only decently priced ones out of the entire collection!

Caroline

12/23/2008

as much as i adore whitney, there is nothing amazing about this line. its so dissapointing because she seems like she has so much talent!

frenchi

12/23/2008

LOL what a fucking joke.

Eleni

12/24/2008

Idiot; the clothing is hardly worth its asking price.

allison

12/24/2008

that tank with the ruffle and the zipper is such a marc by marc jacobs rip off it's not even funny. i hate reality tv.

Linette

12/24/2008

Love Whitney, Hate her clothing line shown on this website. What she wears on tv looks nothing like these clothes, and I shop and collect vintage all the time, and this is more Target than anything else.

Karitza

12/24/2008

I do like Whitney, but i don't exactly really like the clothing line right now...i'll just wait if there are going to be new stuff...I really don't see anything vintage-like on the line, but I do like her, she seems really down to earth and everything cool. And the prices are not really affordable for me, and most girls out there i guess..

emilycharles

12/24/2008

honest opinion most of this has been done before, pretty samey and not what i was expecting price tag wise it's not realistic. Although i'm all for whitney having her own clothing range throughout the hills (die hard fan) you can honestly say she was the one person who had actual drive and compassion for her career so for that im loving the fact she's got this clothing line, would just be good to see some more original designs.

SINCIN

12/24/2008

hahahahahaha...YEAH RIGHT

Ellie

12/26/2008

I watch The Hills, I can't wait to watch her new show. I also generally like the things that she wears on The Hills, what the hell is up with that new line?

natali

12/26/2008

i like the 4th dress but it is too expensive =[

Amanda

12/28/2008

I used to watch The Hills until they're became obviously unrealistic and the dramas were taken out of proportion. Other than that, I like Whitney. She seems really down to earth, but her clothing line is waayyy overpriced. Like someone said earlier, you can find clothing similar to hers at Forever21 for less. Much less.

Johanna

12/29/2008

NATHALIE

this clothing line is not something exact for me, but it's okay also not really beautiful! This is Nathalie from Europ, BELGIUM

jim

12/29/2008

ive seen that stuff before, &way expensive. its okay and stuff but i wouldnt call it unique. &dont get me wrong i like this chik, she seems more real than the others.

lyuda

01/01/2009

i think she went too far with the clothing line

Bronte

01/03/2009

I'm giving that 5 stars for the pure entertainment of that! I didn't realise it was possible to sound so ditzy and fake in a single sentence. Not to mention, didn't that other chick from that hills show do the same thing? Surely, they can't be trying to tell us that anything they do or label as their own is 'reality'.

j

01/03/2009

why nylon, why?

Emily

01/03/2009

The dresses are disgusting... Come on Whitney we know you can do better then that.

Alyssa

01/03/2009

if you want a clothing line that will actually be successful, you need to work a lot harder than that. you can buy very similar clothes for just a fraction of the price. this is disappointing.

marteen

01/04/2009

it's def. not the most innovative but its not terrible either, i really think people give her a hard time because she DOES have her own tv show, and is called jealousy. it's still her line and i'm pretty sure she has a lot more talent than a lot of people with negative things to say.

marie

01/04/2009

hmm well... The City is just a spin off. and i don't think there's anything special about whitney other than she got lucky by getting on the hills. YAY for free publicity for teen vogue, People's revolution, and DVF!! :D OH and of course she speaks like such a fucking dumb ass.

MAINSTREAM!

01/08/2009

Honestly, The line is NO BIG DEAL. Truthfully, it looks like something i'd see blowing in the wind on the sale rack in front of a discount store as i'm driving by. It seems like every person who has had 15 minutes of fame sticks a new line on us and calls it unique and what not but the truth is they just wanna make a buck while they can. PEOPLEPEOPLEPEOPLEE PA-LEASE.

I honestly expected more from Whitney seeing as her personal style is the best/most unique out of all the Hills girls. The color combinations and styles have all been done before, but I do like the first dress, the grey with the tulle ruffles. Best of luck to you Whitney!

gayle

01/11/2009

she sounds speaks like a total idiot. and what makes her think that her line of clothing is so unique and different? everything on her line has already been worn a million times over. it is nothing unique or different, just typical macy's department store clothes worn by LC and Heidi wanna-be's around the west coast.

LaurenMichele

01/11/2009

You know, I really disagree with most of what people have said here. While I do share opinions with people who think "The Hills" is stupid, I do watch the show on occasion, and must admit that the girls do know how to dress, and Whitney's clothing line reflects that style. Bottom line, I like her clothes, they're cute, but I agree with just about everybody else on here when I say that they're over-priced. She may work for Diane Von Furstenburg, but she doesn't quite yet have her skills, therefore shouldn't charge designer prices, and the same goes for Lauren Conrad.

Kitty

01/14/2009

Ummm that sequin mini dress is killer. Haterz!

Nerissa

01/15/2009

honestly, i agree with everyone else. OVERPRICED and even forever 21 can do a better job! yes i do love whitney port personally but i don't thimk she's ready to run her own clothing line. since the economy is HORRIBLE right now i think this should've been an affordable line since were running low on money these days. nice try whitney but you should wait until you have more experience and think of new fresh ideas, not the same old thing.

Alexandra

01/17/2009

I see that everyone or most of everyone that is commenting don't really have anything nice to say about Whitney's new clothing line. I'm sure everyone has a different outlook on fashion and what their own personal style is and it's perfectly okay to have your own opinion on things. But hey, she's starting something for herself. Getting her name out there and not just by the show. The clothes are cute. A little spice mixed with the vintage look. I'm loving it.

Autumn

01/18/2009

wow, I'm definantly loving Whitney. But a clothing line? I didn't see that one coming. And I honestly don't think that this one will make it anywhere. We DON'T need ANOTHER celebrity fashion line. They usually dont make it anywhere anyways, her show is great! I watch it every Monday. But I'm not so sure about this one.

Susan

01/19/2009

I don't like her collection one bit... it seems like she took everything that's in trend and stuck them all together in her garments. There is nothing unique or different about her clothing and the colour she choose for her collections are not attractive. It seems like she just added sequins and ruffles onto a simple garment to make it look more "high fashion".

virginia

01/21/2009

I kind of expected more from Whitney. Her clothes aren't too exciting, but okay. Congrats to Whitney, though, for her new show, job and clothing line!

stop hating on her yall all haters! FUCK YALL WHITNEY ROCKS!

vanessa

01/22/2009

i like whitney better than lauren. but her clothing line is far from impressive. i didnt see any aspects of vintage and uniqueness in her line. the fabrics come off as cheap, the exposed zippers i like. but none of the pieces are worth enough buying. celebrities should really back off of making clothing lines. that our job, the fashion designers to do, the celebrities should just wear it. plus im guessing whitney didnt do any of these designs, she hired some no name designer and put her name on it.

UndergroundLovee

01/24/2009

the line is crap. the show is fake. read: http://nymag.com/daily/fashion/2009/01/whitney_port_has_no_clue_how_t.html

It's very shocking how terrible this collection turned out. Whitney doesn't even dress this badly, I can not believe she would put her name behind this collection.

Eliza

05/13/2009

hmm well idk who she is either. but yea her designs are better than LC but its not WOOOW OMGOD!! and wow, its sooo expensive, sheesh. i mean i would get it if it was like Valentino and some big designer. oh well, im not interested in buying her clothing.

fernanda

05/13/2009

the clothes are fine but that's it. they're waaay too expensive and i don't think she would even wear them. it'd be better if she just sold her own clothes haha, i would buy those.
