MIXTAPE: SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS

MIXTAPE: SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS

Ring in the new year with the ultimate party playlist from School of Seven Bells.

People like New Year's Eve for different reasons: the sequined outfits, the champagne toasts, the party hats, the midnight kiss…The list goes on and on, but for us, there’s nothing quite like a killer New Year's Eve party playlist. You know, the type of mix that will get you dancing from 2008 to 2009.

Clearly, School of Seven Bells gets it. The Brooklyn trio, which released their debut album Alpinisms earlier this fall, didn’t mess around when we asked them to put together their ultimate holiday party playlist; somehow, they make Paula Abdul, Vanity 6, and Gang of Four work together. Don’t believe us? Read singer Alejandra Debeza's explanations and give the mixtape a listen...
REBECCA WILLA DAVIS

Todd Rundgren - "International Feel"

This song sounds like the beginning of something epic. There's this massive quality about it that gives you a feeling of invincibility. It is definitely the way to start the night.

Paula Abdul - "Straight Up"

Forever Your Girl was the first tape Claudia ever owned, and it was the JAM in headphones.

Debbie Deb  "When I hear Music"

In south Florida, Claudia and I grew up with this stuff on the radio. We couldn't really afford to buy a lot of music, so it was all about the 96.5 fm for us. Holla!!

KLF - "3am Eternal"
Those guys were such badasses. They were totally guerrilla-style, one million British pound-burning, machine gun blank-firing badasses.

Can - "Mothersky"
This song is essential to any pre-show ritual. It hasn't aged a day - it still sounds like the future. Just brilliant.

Love and Rockets - "So Alive"
The first time I ever saw this video, I felt like I was doing something naughty. It's all legs, and Daniel Ash with gloves on. So alive.

Bell Biv Devoe - "Poison"
I remember hearing this song on the radio for the first time, and being completely floored. The harmonies and the beat - MMM! -I just want to strut every time I hear it.

Boyz II Men - "Motown Philly"
One of the best memories I have is of the school dances when I was in 6th grade. The school would bring in local radio DJs, and all the kids would break up into dance circles. The breakdown in the middle of this song is sick, sick, sick. It stops me in my tracks every time...until I get in the circle.

Eartha Kitt "Where Is My Man"
Her voice is this song is incredible, all purrs and snarls - hot. I want to be as cool as her when I get older.

Vanity 6 - "Nasty Girl"
This song always makes me want to start a girl group. It's minimal and raunchy, the way club music should be - which leads us to the next song...

Snoop Dogg - "Sexual Eruption"
We don't know if anybody can tell, but this song was the main inspiration for the sound of our song "Chain". We tried the auto-tune at first as a joke, because we were playing this track non-stop. It sounded perfect, so we kept it. There is no shame in our game.

Gang of Four - "To Hell With Poverty"
One of the best dance songs ever made. That bass line is out of control. That band had everything right. I'd probably play this one a few times, and then ring in the New Year with it!
