PRETTY NATURAL

Vegan makeup from an L.A. model citizen

As a former Maybelline model, Josie Maran knew how it felt to wear makeup all day, every day - and the toll it took on her skin.  She was also curious - what were all those chemicals that created foundation, lipstick, and blush?  And were they good for her face, or the planet?

After her Maybelline stint ended, Josie decided not to take any chances.  Instead of signing with another cosmetics brand, she created her own, ensuring all its ingredients were organic, vegan, and never tested on animals.

The result is a series of earth tones - perfect for this season's '90s fashion flashbacks - made with minerals and plant extracts only.  Packaging is 30% recycled paper, and the rest is created from a biodegradable "plastic" made from corn resin.

Josie's also infused her collection with some of her own beauty behavior: she's made a serum of argan oil to help moisturize and smooth out skin, a trick discovered in Morocco during her jet-set phase as a swimsuit model.

This is intriguing! I don't wear makeup much, because I hate the way it feels and looks. So this would be an upgrade, I think. Also a big plus that it's not tested on Animals!

A review of the ingredients on josiemarancosmetics.com shows that most of the products contain beeswax, lanolin, and may contain carmine. NOT vegan ingredients by any means! I would have jumped at the chance to try these products if they were actually vegan.

Yeah, I was puzzled when I saw the headline on this article. I looked at the ingredients a few months ago and saw the beeswax, lanolin (sheep fat), and carmine (coloring derived from beetles). Most vegans try to avoid these ingredients. This is a really misleading article.

As a dedicated vegan, I can't stand when people promote their products as "vegan" when they actually contain animal products.. It's just plain stupid.
