Vintage and thrift shopping could be considered specialty sports, like hunting. Just as some shooters will rise at dawn just to chase their prey through the mountain, so will the vintage girl drive across state lines just to find lost gems from '60s. The results, however, aren't always favorable, and more often than not you're left with the right garment in the wrong condition, with holes, missing beadwork, or a hem that doesn't look right.
That's where
Born - Again Vintage comes in. An expert in the trials of vintage hunting, fashion designer B. Artise and partner Jen Karetnick decided to put together a book of easy instructions on how to update your treasures, while giving them a little bit of spice. Each page involves splicing two different garments to produce something new.
They turn a skirt into a stripe on a dress, and mash a striped blouse with a tank top, resulting in a bib-front shirt. Every season is referenced, and they even throw in a chapter of really fast alterations called “pretty in a blink.”
B. and Jen also prove expert vintage hunters – at the back of the book, they’ve provided a state-by-state breakdown of their favorite American thrift stores, so you can plan an early morning stakeout no matter where you are.
