NYLON/MYSPACE : STOCKHOLM

Sneak peak inside the mag: music (Peter Björn and John, Lo-Fi-Fnk, Mando Diao...) & shopping.

TUNE IN: STOCKHOLM MUSICIANS

Frida Hyvönen

“There seems to be a small war going on about whether I’m a cute Scandinavian blonde or a feminist icon,” says Frida Hyvönen. In a nutshell, she’s both: Imagine impassioned, Tori Amos-style moaning, a song named after Djuna Barnes, and lines like “Once I felt your cock against my thigh” coming from a tall Chloë Sevigny lookalike fond of pencil skirts, black liquid eyeliner, and arty White Stripes-style concept videos, and you’ll begin to understand what all the fuss is about. El Perro Del Mar
The Gothenburg-based singer-songwriter—better known as El Perro Del Mar—looks in person like the love child of Mia Farrow and Twiggy, and creates the sort of dreamy melancholia that one could imagine playing in the background as girls in the early ’60s prep for a school dance—a Virgin Suicides-style school dance, that is. Peter Björn and John
The runaway success of lead single “Young Folks” from their album Writer’s Block—it won a Swedish Grammy for Best Video, was featured on Grey’s Anatomy, and is a downloadable cell-phone ringtone—hasn’t gone to their heads. Yttling, a longtime and accomplished music producer, still considers himself as such, and says “this whole pop-star thing, going around the globe, is more like a hobby. It’s a nice hobby, though.” KATE WILLIAMS

Lo-Fi-Fnk
LFF’s debut album, Boylife, may be a catchy ode to everlasting youth, but there’s an element of trepidation beneath the boisterous dance-party beats. Of the recording process—which took place in a studio underneath the narrow cobblestone streets of Gamla Stan, the oldest neighborhood in Stockholm—Drougge says, “We didn’t really know what we were doing. Mando Diao
It’s the last day of South by Southwest, and Mando Diao—who have just arrived from Sweden—are too jet-lagged to see straight. But they’d better get used to the feeling: In the last year, the band (frontmen Björn Dixard and Gustaf Norén, bassist CJ Fogelklou, drummer Samuel Giers, and keyboardist Mats Bjorke) has toured Japan and Europe, recorded new album Ode to Ochrasy, and received two National Radio Awards and a Swedish Grammy. Omg, unbelieveable that some ppl actually find Sweden cool. Nothing special about this city at all, but I guess if you don't live this shit.. tip: stay away from the quarters around Stureplan and stick to Södermalm.
