NYLON/MYSPACE : BERLIN

Sneak a peak inside the issue's Berlin pages--Jamie Lidell, Ellen Allien, Robots in Disguise...

TUNE IN: BERLIN MUSICIANS

Jamie Lidell

To explain in any kind of technical detail exactly what Jamie Lidell does onstage would take a lot more than the space available here. Suffice to say, then, that he sings, and human beatboxes, samples it live (on what he calls “The Machine”), loops it to make backing tracks, sings over that, beatboxes some more (adding a kick drum here, a snare there), and so forth. And, sometimes, he does it wearing a bathrobe. LUKE CRISELL

Ellen Allien
Ellen Allien laughs a lot; in fact, it’s one of the only things that disrupt her burbling, happy, fascinatingly tangential discourses. Her joviality belies a remarkably adept, successful businesswoman. Allien is not just one of the leading electronic musicians and producers in Berlin, but one of the city’s foremost creatives: she heads up a record labels (BPitch Control and Memo Musik), and a fashion line, in addition to holding down a busy D.J. schedule. UNDER COVER OF THE NACHTE: BERLIN NIGHTLIFE

If anyone knows where the nightlife action is in Berlin, it's electro duo Robots In Disguise--if these ladies aren't playing somewhere, they're probably D.J.ing (or know someone who is). Here, Robot Sue Denim's guide to fun after dark.

Rio
Chauseestrasse 106, 10115
A massive beat-up old building where great parties are held every Saturday, plus plenty of good bands do club sets here as well. RID had an aborted gig here once—it’s a long story, but the gig is continually in the process of being rescheduled, so keep checking MySpace.

White Trash
Schönhauser Allee 6-7, 10119
This place is covered in Chinese decor because it used to be a Chinese restaurant, but they have fast, but very tasty food and good music—the bar staff is trapped behind cages to make sure they don’t get out of hand. Last time Dee and I were in there we were half naked…well more like a quarter naked because we were brilliantly body painted, shirt-and-skinny-tie style for the cover of our next album.

8mm Bar
Schonhauser Allee 1778, 10437
Dark and dingy in the best way, a place you go to late and leave early (as in the next morning). The name comes from the films they project onto the walls. This is a place where all the bands go after their gigs for self-congratulation or commiseration and it’s one of my very favorite bars in Berlin (though I am biased because it’s owned by friends). I D.J. here for six hours at a time, drip-fed vodka and tea.

Magnet Club
Greifswalderstrasse 212 -213, 10405
Every band plays here at some point—RID has played at least four gigs here because the live sound is very good and the venue is hot, sweaty, and messy. I like it very much. Especially now that the dressing rooms have changed from the size of a shoebox behind the stage to a huge space at the top of the venue where the party continues all night.

THINGS OF DESIRE:
SHOPPING
Since the fall of the wall in 1989, Berlin—never before a place exactly known for its fashion—has become a city where independent designers and cute, hip boutiques flourish. In the Mitte neighborhood that was formerly in East Berlin, particularly, there are enough cool stores to make you forget that you should probably try to hit some museums, too. NAOMI NEVITT

Apartment
Memhardstrasse 8, 10178
The Berlin boutique at the forefront of the fashion scene, Apartment sells a who’s-who list of hip European wares from obscure Berlin based labels HuiHui and Klein Coprse to international stars like Cheap Monday, all under the shadow of the TV tower steps from Alexanderplatz in their subterranean store.

Bless
Mulackstrasse 38, 10119
The German HQ of the Paris-Berlin design collective that helped put the city on the map as a fashion capital 10 years ago. In addition to selling the labels latest wares, the Mitte shop also acts as a rotating exhibition space when the fashion house isn’t showing at haute museums and presentations like the Berlin Bienniale and Centre Pompidou.

Firmament
Schröderstrasse 8, 10115
The physical manifestation of Jorg Haas’ online magazine Being Hunted, Firmament sells top streetwear brands, from PAM and Supreme to Head Porter and Unrivaled, not to mention Firmament’s own private label, as well as toys and limited edition sneakers, in the Mitte boutique.

Best Shop
Alte Schönhauserstrasse 6, 10119
Located on a quiet street in Mitte, Best Store Berlin sells some of the loudest graphic art and clothing in town. From braided multi-hued sweaters from Germany’s Bossert & Schorn to geometric prints by English label Makinjama, Best Shop keeps the items they sell vivid in the otherwise all white boutique.

CRASH HERE: LUX 11
Rosa-Luxemburgstrasse. 9-13, 10178
Boutique hotels often sacrifice comfort and amenities for style and light house music. Bed and breakfasts usually abandon any sense of design for an overbearing, sometimes frightening, hospitality. Berlin’s Lux 11, located in the retail-friendly Mitte neighborhood, bridges the gap between these disparate accommodations by offering private apartment-style rooms. Soft colors and high ceilings complement familiar minimalist furnishings designed with an attention to comfort lost in many hotels. The rooms are suited to prolonged stays and cocktail parties, easily catered and stocked by the hotel’s restaurant and bar, seafood-haven Shiro i Shiro that, with its massive communal table, feels more like a friend’s kitchen.
