No matter how high our heels or how tough our yogilates, we're always kids at heart. With Fall in full swing, it becomes glaringly obvious we still need Saved by the Bell reruns, hot cocoa, and of course, mac and cheese.
From a jaw-dropping $95 dish in L.A. to the kind you make on a hot plate in your apartment, we've made a list of the best eight mac and cheese dishes in the US.
Maybe you can snag a recipe or two for your mom the next time you're home.
Just Add Milk
Annie's organic shells and white cheddar
Found: Organic food stores everywhere
Why: Its mascot is an adorably healthy bunny, and the super cheap go-to lunch is the only organic mac and cheese on the list.
Bring a Date
Macaroni and cheese with white truffles
Found: Melisse restaurant in L.A.
Why: Chef Josiah Citrin grates on a generous portion of white truffles with his brown butter truffle froth, and only offers the $95 dish during white truffle season. Say truffle one more time. Truffle.
When it's Super Cold
Mack 'n cheese please
Found: Seattle's eats market cafe
Why: The dish is found only on the kid's menu, but Washingtonites have been flocking there for years with nieces, nephews and strange kids off the street just to sample a bite.
Combo Comfort Food
Macaroni and Cheese Soup
Found: Au Bon Pain
Why: Soup and mac and cheese? Together? With romano, cheddar and a touch of nutmeg? Sure beats Ramen noodles.
Be Trendy
Parisienne Mac and Cheese
Found: S'Mac in NYC
Why: A restaurant entirely devoted to mac and cheese, this dish is made with creamy brie, roasted figs, shiitake mushrooms and seasoned with rosemary. S'Mac also offers a plethora of other international versions of the dish. And they deliver too, in case you're too busy in your jammies.
Stuff Your Face
Sweetie Pie's macaroni and cheese
Found: Sweetie Pie restaurant in St. Louis
Why: Best paired with fried chicken and sweet potatoes, this superrich version is homemade, southern, and may be the only acceptable time you wear elastic waistband pants. (Probably not, though.)
Caliente!
Mollie Fontaine's macaroni and cheese
Found: Mollie Fontaine's Tapas Lounge in Memphis
Why: Baked with cayenne, fresh white pepper, and smoked bacon, customers order lots of water to chase the super spicy and delectable dish. Then they order more.
Bite-size
Zola Lobster Mac and Cheese
Found: Zola in Washington, DC Why: A relatively small portion of very rich mac and cheese paired with a substantial piece of lobster, this is a treat you should eat slowly and savor. You may not be eating that decadently for a while.
