YES WE CAN!

YES WE CAN!

Zooey's long-awaited HOPE t-shirt, along with a friendly reminder.

Earlier this year, Zooey Deschanel posed in a HOPE t-shirt for photographer Hilary Walsh.

We're unveiling the tee now, with a simple but really crucial message:

Make sure you're registered to vote.

You will not be hunted down by the FBI if you register.  You will not be put on any spam or junk mail lists.  You will not be filed in some scary CIA cabinet.  But here's what you will have:

The real chance to change what you don't like about our country, its economy, its laws, and its policies toward its people - you know, you.

Go to Rock the Vote or Declare Yourself today to register to vote for Barack Obama... or even that other guy.  It's really important!

Faran, this piece has an error. There are more than 2 people running for president in 2008. Including John & Barack there are at least 6 candidates that are on enough ballots to gain enough electoral votes to win the election... and those include: Ralph Nader, Cynthia McKinney, Bob Barr and Chuck Baldwin. Corporate Media is doing a well enough job of fooling people into thinking that they only have 2 choices, don't add to the problem.

Amanda

i think it is really good that everyone, including Nylon is trying to get everyone to vote. it is very important that everyone votes this year. even though there are more than two candidates, obama and mccain are the two who will more than likely have a chance at the presidency. i am not quite old enough to vote, so i want everyone who can to use their voice.

Faran Krentcil

10/02/2008

All the piece says is that Zooey is voting for Obama, and if you register to vote, you too can vote for Obama... or the other guy. Whoever your other guy may be.

Patti

10/02/2008

Carlos, you're totally missing the point. The only chance we have to get our country back is to VOTE FOR OBAMA!

Courtney

10/02/2008

If you don't want to vote for Obama, at least vote against McCain. If you vote for a third party candidate you're taking votes away from Obama. I know it's sad that we can't vote in someone other than our two choices, but we all have to make a stand against the Christian Right trying to medievilize our country.

Jamie

Obama FTW!

If past elections show us anything, it's that a vote for any non-major political party is essentially a vote for the Republican party. If that's how you'd rather have your vote go that's fine, but if you swing more Democratic then just vote Democrat. There aren't enough voters for Independents, Liberals, or Green Parties for a vote their way to turn into a presidency no matter how much we wish they would. Oh, and this t-shirt is rad, way better than the old "Vote or Die."

In response to Carlos' post, it is true that there are more than two candidates, but it is also true that there is little to no chance that any of these candidates will win. Therefore, if you vote for a candidate who isn't associated with a major party, your vote will literally get lost. It is a fact that our next president will be either john mccain or barack obama. If you aren't satisfied with either of these candidates, pick which one you think will do less damage to our country, and vote. Then your vote will count towards the election, and help keep an absolute disaster out of office. Personally, I am all for obama- you can always find inconsistencies and negatives about any candidate, but he is by far the best for the net four years of my future and protecting my rights. Just make sure your decision counts.

VOTE FOR CHANGE (the real kind, not the stuff McCain made up after he realized Obama kicks ass...his included)!!!

Dena

10/02/2008

I love this shirt. It's very cute and Zooey looks cute wearing it! But, in response to the election, VOTE. Americans are lucky to have the power to voice their opinions and thoughts on who should be out possible candidates. So, vote! It only takes a moment of your time to try and change the country for the better. Our time is now. VOTE FOR CHANGE! Vote for '08ama

What I've always loved about Nylon besides the amazing fashion and music articles, is how unlike many other woman's magazines they kept their nose out of politics and in fashion where it belongs. In that way you seemed smarter and unbiased. Can't we make up our own minds? Do we really need Nylon or a t-shirt telling us how to vote? I suppose most readers are lemmings, so maybe it will work for you. I guess you guys are just as annoyingly biased as all of Hollywood and most major media publications.

KELLY

10/02/2008

ZOE - Nylon isn't biased. You can vote for whoever you want. You can indeed make up your own mind. And if you haven't at this point, that's just scary. Zooey Deschanel requested to have her photo taken in this shirt and the photo was promised to Nylon readers in the Letter From The Editor in the beginning of the new issue and was requested by commentors when outtake photos were posted from her cover photoshoot. Make up you own mind, vote for whoever you want, wear whatever designers or vintage pieces you'd like. One of the best part about Nylon readers is that they are all incredibly individual people and no matter what Zooey Deschanel or any Nylon staffers' perspectives, it's up to you to change the world and this article serves as a simple reminder that the first and easiest step to take to make such a change is to REGISTER TO VOTE.

Zoe

10/02/2008

Honey, my mind has been made up for McCain and I have been libertarian for years. I can make up my own mind, it's others that seem to follow like lemmings because Obama, Zooey, and Nylon are "cool". Re-read what Nylon wrote and tell me again it isn't unbiased. Be rational.

Zoe

10/02/2008

Don't give me that change the world bull shit either. Are you 18 and this is your first time??? It's electoral votes not popular girlie. Register to vote. Thanks, I have been for 12 years.

Chloe

10/02/2008

Zoe's right, this is EXTREMELY biased. I'm voting for Obama, but seriously Nylon give both candidates a chance.

Aimee

10/02/2008

How silly. Why should NYLON be unbiased when the future of the WORLD is at stake? Good for them for taking a stand in the right direction! Plus Zooey is AWESOME!

laurennnn

10/02/2008

think everyone in this country has a say in who leads this country. I like how nylon is encouraging the young people to vote . I'm not 18 yet but if I was I soooo would . and as a response to zoe I think ur biased in ur comments becuase u wouldnt get mad I'm sure if this was about mccain so I would reallly keep my opinions to myself if I were u....sure this story is being biased but it IS A OBAMA T-SHIRT!!!! WAT DO U EXPECT!!!

laurennnn

10/02/2008

and also I would vote for obama not because nylon posted this story but because I like what he has to say about the economy and everything . just because I'm young that does not make me ignorant to politics

cee

10/02/2008

hmmm ZOE, if you think that Nylon readers are lemmings, then why are you reading the magazine's website? Just because someone doesn't share your exact opinion does not make her/him a lemming. Jeez.

I agree with Zoe, I'm sick of all media being biased. Good journalism is supposed to be unbiased, that's how you know you're getting the truth. But maybe all you 16 and 17 year olds need to go to college first to learn that.

Sarah

10/02/2008

It's fine for someone to support their candidate, but Zoe and Emily make sense...also Aimee you sound stupid.

Jon

10/02/2008

LAURENNNNN: Why is it biased to ask that publications are unbaised?? WHAT?

Madison

10/02/2008

This isn't journalism, it's a fashion magazine. They don't need to represent all designers equally so why would they need to represent all political parties equally? But even the New York Times is endorsing Obama, and they're the most respected paper in the world. Guess that blows your theory.

Jon

10/02/2008

Madison, that's what good journalism is. Most media is biased, especially the NY Times. They get ragged on for that pretty consistently from most news organizations. It is frustrating when magazines so blatantly endorse a candidate. I'm even voting for Obama and I find it frustrating. It's called being rational.

10/02/2008

I love Nylon but you kind of just have to know magazines like this are going to biased for Obama. It's really nice to see how many people speak up against it though. I'm pleasantly surprised.

Jon

10/02/2008

Also, if this magazine isn't journalism Madison, then why are they even touching this issue? I realize they didn't cover a story about Obama/McCain. But they are so obviously biased and it's just annoying they think you all have to agree with them- but it looks like most of you do.

laurennnn

10/02/2008

ok dumbfucks I was saying that this story is biased because it is only supporting obama ....... some of u ppl prolly don't even know watz any of the canidates hav to say so stop commenting

molly

10/02/2008

nylon, stick to fashion. being so biased is really a turn off

Erin

10/03/2008

Dearest Nylon, please try not to be so blatently biased, it looks terrible on you. Zooey is fantastic, and I adore nearly everything about this magazine, but try to be respectful of both of the candidates in the running, not just Obama. I personally don't identify with either party, I just believe in giving everyone a fair chance. And really people, I would expect this kind of talk on something like myspace but please don't tarnish the beauty that is Nylon by using words like "retarded" and "dumbfucks" while posting. Stop putting each other down just because your views differ. Have some respect.

Sarah

While I have a strong love for Zooey, Obama, and any cute Obama apparel, I can see why some readers would have a problem with this blurb. But regardless of the political opinions of NYLON readers, it's very important that everyone is registered to vote...and votes this november! Young people (18 to mid-twenties) especially! Vote Vote Vote! <3

Why cant America make a law that it should be compulsory to vote ? I found out only 25% of America's population actually vote . If so , maybe thats why the country's not getting its best and then the rest of the country sulk about how crappy the president is . Make voting compulsory ! By the way , good choice of celebrity endorsement ; they finally chose someone who actaully cares .

In response to, well pretty much everyone The most important factor in our decision making about the president should be his character, followed by his policies as they relate to economic, social, and environmental well-being. To judge the character accurately we need to let go of our partisan labels and allow our gut to do the job. We can all read candidate's body language and facial expressions. We can always tell when a smile is genuine, and when it is not. Speeches are written by clever speech writers; hence we should not fall into the emotional traps that these speeches contain. Another measure of character is how well a candidate occupies and stays on the high ground. For example when a candidate tries to gain sympathy or make personal attacks on his opponent, then he has left the high ground. I like not to show my bias, when I write but it's difficult for writer not to show bias for something they care so passionately about. Nylon is not a political magazine and it usually, I'm not saying always but usually sells to a more liberal, artistic niche and hence their vote would sway towards Obama, because of his more liberal perspective. Honestly, being an artistic person myself, I have a very liberal perspective, and seeing as though the running mate McCain has chose to run with, and the many times he's left the high ground with his commercials with insults, and durning the debates while Obama didn't one take a stab at his character and McCain disrespectfully called Obama "that one". Not only did McCain insult Obama, he also insulted Tom, who was asking the questions. When Tom asked who McCain was planning on holding and treasury postion, he said "Not you Tom.." I understand that is suppose to be a joke, but really it wasn't to amusing to anyone. Everyone has the right to their own opinion, and Nylon's bias opinion is for Obama, they are not a political magazine or newspaper and they have the right to their political view because thats the niche they are catering to. In response to everyone who demeans younger 17 and 16 year old, they have a political view as well, and a right to it, and to the person who said they have been voting for 12 years and they have "experience" voting, well, look where your generations voting "experience" got us. As far as liking Obama, just because of the television commericials, that statement is just inncorrect on so many levels. Obama has aired far as many threatening commercials as McCain. And as far as I am concerned, I have been watching every minute of this election, and trust me, the commercials of Obama's haven't swayed my vote whatso ever. Happy Voting Ameria

I love how all you tolerant leftist think the only reasonable choice is Obama, that's real tolerance for you. ;) You're all so unique and different, that must be why you all think the same. Believe or not people can be different, tolerant, and just plain decent and still be -GASP- Republicans.
