NYLON/MYSPACE : LONDON

The NYLON/MySpace International Music Issue dropped in on London first. Here's a sneak peak...

TUNE IN: LONDON MUSICIANS

Patrick Wolf

Wolf grew up in South London, left home at 16, and released his first album, Lycanthropy (referring to the ability of a human to transform into a wolf) two years later. It was critically acclaimed, but he is dismissive of the praise. “A lot of people get into this to have their ass licked by music journalists; I’m trying to build up a connection with my fans,” he says. “And everyone was like ‘Who’s this 18-year-old boy?’ Everyone thought I was a circus freak.” He says his new record, the moving and at times mesmeric The Magic Position, “should be enough for people to realize I’m not a novelty act.” It would be an unlikely assumption. Wolf plays 12 of the myriad instruments on it. LUKE CRISELL

The Klaxons
If there’s one band to credit with the change in London nightlife over the last year or so—the nitrous oxide “bars” where you can buy a balloon full of the stuff for £2, the preponderance of neon accessories, etc.—it’s Klaxons. In a mad rush of flare-gun-like success since forming in late 2005 (a triumphant gig only weeks after their first rehearsal, a record deal only weeks after that, a swift abundance of zealous, light-stick waving acolytes), the trio has single-handedly spawned the phenomenon known as New Rave—although, to hear them tell it, the whole thing has been like a science-lab mishap that begat a B-movie beast. Fields
You could say that Fields frontman and founder Nick Peill is living the dream. Bored with his job as an elementary school teacher, Peill quit and formed a band, finding the other members through his circle of friends. “I’ve been friends with Jamie for about 12 years,” Peill says, “and another mutual friends of ours moved to London and lived with Thorunn. He knew Henry as well, so I met them through him.” That particular friend just happened to be Simon White, ex-Menswear guitarist and songwriter and now manager of super-successful British exports Bloc Party. Bat for Lashes
On her debut album, Fur and Gold, Natasha Khan, the singer-songwriter known as Bat for Lashes, crafts an entire musical world, populated by animals and ghost children, and governed by the logic of dreams. But it isn't the first time she's created a universe. "When I was a kid a friend of mine and I started to dig a hole behind the garden shed to make an underground fairy cave," she says. "I think we got three centimeters, then hit tree roots." Luckily, Khan's efforts this time have been more successful. Imagine Stevie Nicks with a degree in zoology, or Björk as young, English, and obsessed with childhood, and you may get a idea of the melancholic, haunting, baroque pop that prompted Jarvis Cocker to request her as the opener for his tour earlier this year. SHOP GEMS: COURTESY OF THE BLACKRATS
The Blackrats are Tara Rocks, Lauren Henry (a.k.a. Legs), and Peaches Geldof (daughter of Sir Bob), and they spend their nights in their hometown of London frantically scampering from party to party and D.J.ing quite a few of them. They need to look good while they do it, of course. Here, they share their secrets of shopping for clothes in London town.

CRASH HERE: THE METROPOLITAN
In the 10 years since its opening, The Metropolitan Hotel has become infamous for its award-winning restaurant, Nobu (it’s the original—head chef is none other than Nobuyuki Matsuhisa), and every celebrity this side of rehab has been snapped leaving its Met Bar. While both are noteworthy, the merits of the rest of the hotel are by no means inferior. With rooms and suites overlooking Hyde Park, many of which feature floor to ceiling windows, yoga mats (and a jogging map should you feel energetic), Shambhala products in the bathroom, and feng shui’d rooms the perfect respite from the bustle of the city.
