MY JEANS COST LESS THAN MY HIGHLIGHTS

MY JEANS COST LESS THAN MY HIGHLIGHTS

Our denim cost $20, and it makes our butt look expensive.

Over the past few weeks, we've noticed a pattern with NYLON comments:

According to you guys, some of the clothes we feature are very amazing... and also very expensive.

It's true that sometimes, you want to shop without thinking about your bank account, and sometimes, you refuse to fork over more than $50 for a good pair of jeans.

If that's the case, listen up:  L.E.I. just released a pair of skinny jeans in honor of their new muse, Taylor Swift.  She may be a country singer, but these pants actually rock - they come in dark denim or faded gray, they've got a little bit of stretch, and they're $20.

We love them.  We're wearing them.  You can buy them at Walmart.

I def. love a good deal on skinny jeans! Im tired of paying an arm and a leg for them. Great job, I will get a pair! :)

Is it bad that I kind of shuddered when I read, "You can buy them at WAL*MART." ? Ooohh well. But, sweet. I always love me a good pair o' skinnies. Yay for low prices.

Karissah

07/08/2008

The 12.50 F21 jeans were probably more ethically produced too, and the cashier who rings you up is likely treated better and paid more. Don't shop at walmart, it's wrong. I'd rather fork over 200 for some USA made JBrands out of my 18k a year salary and feel good about myself.

Never will I give the corporate EVIL GIANT my support. WAL-MART is the devil. And so is Rachel Evan Wood.

i loved karrissah's comment so much that i had to write one too.... i hate walmart! they are the devil! = ) i am a big nerd, and i get all my jeans for like $5 at the thrift stores... i hardly ever by them new! =)

wal-mart is a bad place but give nylon a break, they are trying to help you out, not everyone makes 18k a year! forever 21 is just as bad as wal-mart but who cares they have way cuter clothes! thanks for the tip NyLoN!

okay, so NYLON was trying to help us out. don't bite their head off. wal-mart is a tyrant trying ot take over the world and pays shit, but don't spazz. F21 jeans are better, and cheaper, and I'm wearing mine right now. :D thanks NYLON. i still love you. <3

Shut the eff up Karissah and "Die Wal-Mart Die" Why are you even commenting on this? Why are you even reading magazines? It's against Earth-concerned-freak code to read magazines that feature skinny (but beautiful) girls and lipstick made out of whale's blubber.

You girls are ridiculous. Cut the cat-fight. Thank you, NYLON, for catering to your loyal consumers.

Sara

07/08/2008

I have actually worked at both Forever 21 and Walmart.... The difference? Walmart paid me almost $9 bucks an hour, where as Forever 21 only paid me minimum wage ($5.25 back a year ago) You do the math.

Dawn

07/08/2008

Oh Nylon! I love you...you are such a great resource for us real gals out here...but endorsing Walmart??? Fashion CAN be affordable, but telling your readership to buy them at Walmart is a big no, no! :-(

Elizabeth

07/08/2008

Catfight? Hippie? Caring about people being forced into unfair labor because we want outsourced, cheap clothing that's not well-made and isn't natural fabric doesn't make a person a hippie...it makes them socially conscious and SMART. I LOVE fashion and I am FAR from wealthy...but I'd rather shop sales and get WAY better (socially and clothing wise) skinny jeans for less than $20. NYLON, I love the magazine, but I'm not so "loyal" to you endorsing a BAD company and tacky cheap jeans.

Glennisha

07/08/2008

You guys need to chill with the whole calling walmart an evil endorsement. Most of you obviously haven't checked the tags on other jeans from retail chains. I think this is a great idea Nylon, the jeans look great.

I'd rather you post about Target than Walmart. Target > Walmart

NickieSixx

07/08/2008

Least you guys have the choice to shop at Walmart or not....we don't even have a walmart in NYC. I so miss my Super-Walmart back home in Indiana...nothing beats going there at 2am. And they have a good lipgloss selection!

Hollie

07/08/2008

What about those of us that don't wear 'skinny' jeans? I'm thin, but I'm curvy, i.e. my hips tend to be a bit wide. Curvy gals look terrible in skinny jeans. Even if I could wear them, I wouldn't...they make everyone's butt look nonexistent. In fact, they almost make you look like you took a dump in your pants. Do they make jeans that aren't 'skinny'?

Megan

07/08/2008

We all know about the unethical sweatshop labor and I totally agree but seriously just because it's brand named and sold in a store in the mall doesn't make it any less likely that a sweatshop is involved, unless you read on the tag where it's made, most bets are off. They can easily have it made in a sweat shop, jack up the prices and people would pay them no questions asked. *shrugs* On a relevant note, good job on the jean find Nylon!

vix

07/08/2008

i was so excited when i read jeans for $20. but i didn't expect them to be wal-mart, i dont know what i was expecting. congrats on the jean find! but even though some of your stuff is too expensive, i'd like to get quality for more than $20. maybe we could find some sort of happy compromise. love you always and forever ;* btw. target is the shit! i agree with whoever wrote target>walmart.

marie

07/08/2008

lol, you guys are all funny. unless you all look for clothes made in the US...then all of you buy from sweatshops. Unless you eat home grown products then all of you are supporting products that were grown (fruits, vegetables) or handled by various people who were working in sweat shop situations. nylon, thanks for the suggestion!

Nice. I was actually shocked to see lei in walmart the other day, although the quality of the clothing isnt as good there. anyhow. Shop at steve and barrys. Seriously. amanda bynes and SJP will hook you up for less than 20 dollars on every item including shoes and they're good substantial and cute clothes.

maggie

07/08/2008

LEI is available at more than just wal-mart. You can get it other places. I'm not sure if this is exclusive to WM, since the article didn't specify. So all the girls complaining about WM, look for it somewhere else. There is good and bad with every store you shop at. You just hear about it more with WM because they've been so successful. I think it's great that Nylon took the time to post something affordable. I buy all my skinny jeans at Urban because that's the only place that seems to still sell them, and they fit me like a glove. But I'll definitely be checking this pair out.

Hemaly

thats so sexy. off to walmart i go. xoxoxo

Nicole

07/08/2008

Have any of you guys realized that there are other millions of clothing stores that most of their stuff is made in China? Why are you complaining so much about a pair of friken jeans, some people can't afford to buy nicer jeans and it's great that L.E.I. is selling jeans at wal-mart, and f21 skinny jeans are shit. Most of their good jeans are $30. So stop all your complaining its damn annoying. Thanks nylon xoxox

Anonymous

Just cut the shit all of you hating on Wal-Mart. Just don't buy the jeans if you have so much crap on Wal-Mart. Just chill. Nylon thought people were complaining about, you know, jeans from True Religion or Rock and Republic where they cost like 2 or 300 per pair. And when they actually put affordable jeans you have to complain. God, just shut up and get on with your life. Go Nylon.

Nona

07/08/2008

If this is the only resonse you can come up with (Walmart as and pop country singers as fashionable idols) to the lack of budget-friendly shopping I'm extremely disappointed in you, Nylon. This is not creative or crafty, it is cheap in the negative sense of the word.

Madison

07/08/2008

These jeans are cute. Who cares that Walmart sells them? Who cares that Taylor Swift wears them? When did everyone become such snobs? Go Nylon for being honest about their budget instead of saying their clothes are always from cool stores. I bet if you went to my high school we would be friends.

Katie

07/08/2008

I love wal*mart. Sorry girls! Although I don't buy clothes there, I'll have to check these jeans out! It's awesome, Nylon<3

Just an FYI for all of those..."what's wrong with Walmart?" & "Other stores sell sweat-shop clothes" ladies out there. I believe the issue with Walmart is this: They come into small towns, destroy smaller mom & pop shops by putting them out of business which forces the locals to get jobs there.( and we aren't talking about people getting a "high school" job but people who will work there for a lifetime to support their families ). Walmart does not offer their long-term employees any medical benefits, any retirement plans or savings plans and does not pay very well and give pay raises often. And yes, they import cheap products from China and because they are so in-expensive, they determine the market for other stores...which as mentioned before, drives smaller company's out of business. Sooooo, just take that info and do with it what you may. L.E.I. is sold at other stores. If it is important to you to not support Walmart, then shop around. BTW, it's great to see so many opinionated ladies! ;-)

anonymous

No one is disputing the fact that an affordable pair of jeans is great. What's being disputed is consumer awareness of the morals of Walmart. (Note: I am not discrediting ALL "Corporate Evil Giants" or however you want to refer to corporations.) Walmart is of particular interest for many, many reasons. If interested, see the following: 1. Wal-Mart destroys more jobs than it creates. A new Wal-Mart destroys jobs by putting local merchants out of business. The jobs Wal-Mart creates are fewer, lower-paying and mostly part-time. (Good Jobs First) 2. Wal-Mart burdens public health care programs. Most jobs at Wal-Mart have little or no health benefits. Wal-Mart encourages its workers to seek public assistance for their health care. In Georgia, 10,000 children of Wal-Mart employees were enrolled in the public health insurance program. (NOW with Bill Moyers, AFL-CIO) 3. Wal-Mart exploits workers. The average hourly worker makes just $18,000 dollars a year. Meanwhile, in 2002, the corporation raked in $6.6 billion in profits. Wal-Mart has known for years that many of its stores violate child labor laws and state regulations requiring work breaks - but has done little, if anything, to stop it. (Mother Jones, New York Times) 4. Wal-Mart degrades the environment. The federal government charged Wal-Mart with violating the Clean Water Act in 17 locations across the country. Run-off from Wal-Mart construction sites polluted drinking water, streams and lakes. To settle the charges Wal-Mart agreed to pay a $1 million dollar fine. (EPA) Why They're Wrong: Proponents of Wal-Mart tout their low prices - and the positive impact they have on the purchasing power of consumers. But Wal-Mart is able to provide low prices because they are heavily subsidized by taxpayers. In addition to relying on public health care for their employees, Wal-Mart has benefited from over $1 billion in economic development subsidies.

Becky

07/08/2008

nylon forgot to mention that they're not sold in stores.

Emily

07/08/2008

I think it's great there are so many opinions about purchase power. Really exciting to see. But I would buy the jeans because Walmart has provided them at the best price, and there is nothing illegal about that.

target=hell

07/08/2008

All of you guys that think target is so great have obviously never worked for them. They pay shit. I made like 4 more bucks an hour working for Walmart. Oh and if you've ever bought any clothes from target they're actually worse than Walmarts. If you wash a shirt one time they get holes in them. Stop hating on Walmart.

Staci

07/09/2008

This is a complicated issue and I am glad to see that many others are not only concerned about affordable clothing, but also about where this clothing (affordable or otherwise) is coming from. Someone above said that girls who are into environmentalism shouldn't be reading fashion magazines that feature non-organic products (i.e. lip gloss made with whale ingredients). There is nothing wrong with checking out the latest fashions regardless of ingredient/quality. The publication let's the consumer know what's in and what's out. From there, the consumer can make the choice to either purchase the product or not. Also - fashion magazines are now beginning to put more focus on environmental friendly products for their readers. Environmentally conscious consumers are beginning to make themselves heard and with that, change will come. Also - I've neither worked for Target or Wal*Mart but at a recent shopping adventure at Target, I found myself buying a silk-screened tank made in Guatemala that said "Go Green" on the front. As I was waiting in line, I felt this surge of confusion come over me: this tank says "Go Green" and I was about 95% positive that the shirt was not made of organic cotton nor was it made in a shop without exceptional environmental and worker regulations. Needless to say, I felt like a tool but the message was good none-the-less. The underlying problem, however, was this: if I (and 100 other people) didn't buy this product, the money (however little it may be) would not go to those workers making the tank that we bought. So, we spend less, they make less, making the problem worse for people on the outsourcing end (generally speaking). This is a big deal because it simply emphasizes the fact that whatever happens with outsourcing eventually comes back to bite us Americans (and otherwise prosperous countries) in the ass. Consumers are generally stupid (i.e. paying $1.50 for a bag of chips at Disneyland when they could have bought them for $0.50 at the gas station before entering the park). I think that consumers need to be aware of what they're buying and who they're buying from. Without making such an effort to do so, over time, the period will compound. To all the people who are trying to make a difference(regardless of income): way-to-go! Also - We Americans are whoremongers of product. We waste far more than we should ever have to (of food, gas, electricity, water, clothes, etc.) Honestly, we don't need 50 pairs of shoes, 30 pairs of jeans (seriously, I've met people...), supersize Cheeseburger and fries, etc. That money bought on clothes, food, etc., could be spent more wisely. Don't be lazy! You'll save yourself (and your country) some extra cash! And with millions plus people living around, the cash adds up. :D ALSO - to HOLLIE: PacSun has great skinny jeans for girls with hips. They're made by Bullhead Denim and they're 2 pairs for $55. Trust me on this one, they're absolutely fabulous!

maryli

07/09/2008

i haven't checked out the jeans, maybe they're the best. but there are skinny jeans for under $50 just about anywhere normal people shop besides walmart. the fact that walmart is selling them in conjunction with a country singer just means they're probably on their way out. the weirdest part of this story is that nylon and urban outfitters work together a lot, and urban definitely sells skinny jeans for pretty cheap. but they do kind of suck.

okai,so everyones freakkin out that you can buy the jeans from walmart.well guys,LEI brand is everywhere, you can buy it from jcpenneys, macys, ross, blah blah blah.its just a matter of where the cheapest one is. && if you're really looking for cheap jeans,go on sales. wetseal has a great sale whenever they have the "buy 1 get 1 free all clearances". i bought some $5 jeans from them. also, hot topic has some great skinny jeans which you can wait for when theyre on clearance, they always have the "extra 50% off all clearances", i got 2 pairs for only $10. once i got vans jeans for only $20. yes that is vans, from the vans store itself. macys is awesome for having sales. just check out the clearance section, once i got jeans for $7. again, its just a matter of where you shop && when you hit the mall. my advice to you, always check out the clearance section first. because you dont have to buy expensive clothes to look oh so cute. oh, && by the way,im a fashion major,so you bet.:)

Haha u guys are all too funny. Getting worked up over jeans! I mean, if you're really against slave labour and cheap jeans, then quit complaining and dissing other people on a magazine website and do something more productive. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and you shouldn't have a go at them just because what they say doesn't necesserily agree with your point of view. Express your feelings on the subject, definitly, but don't shut someone else down to do it.

genny

07/10/2008

Well, Marie, (as well as many more of the commentators) some of us DO try to look for clothes made in the US or by brands we know don't treat their foreign workers like anything less than human beings. And many of us do try to eat locally, if not grow our own food. Being socially conscious, aware, and active is not a negative thing. Our world is not so silently spiraling downhill thanks to the lack of knowledge, foresight, and activism, we, our parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and great-great-grandparents have had. It is not a simple task to reverse the damage, but it is a much easier task to at least try to stop adding to it. For those of you who do not have anything BUT a Wal-Mart near you, I am sorry for your loss. And as much as I love shopping vintage and second-hand, I understand that to base one's entire wardrobe around that type of shopping isn't for everyone. But give it a shot. And if you don't want to do that, just shop less. You really won't look stylish in WalMart clothing anyway. Mass-production is never in style among the young, hip crowd. (I mean, Andy Warhol told us that in 1962, commenting on the commodification , commercialization, and mass-production OBJECTS that cam to symbolize what it means to be an "American." the messages hasn't changed today) See if there is someone in your town who makes clothing...paying that person $20 to make you a shirt is so much better--you'll even have a one-of-a-kind. It's local couture. And, to think about it logically: 12.50 or 20 dollars to a pair of jeans? Divide that number is half, because that's at LEAST the amount walmart CEOS keep in profit. 6.25 or 10 dollars for fabric, a zipper, rivets, AND to pay for labor? It is tricky to make jeans...it takes well over an hour, even with heavy machinery. There is no way the laborers are getting paid enough money for their work. Not to mention everything else that degrades sweatshop labor. These are hard times for every American, and I appreciate Nylon's attempt to find something cheap to lift our spirits about our economic state. But funding the companies that come in to small towns and put thousands of Americans out of business, then rehire them as cashiers for minimal pay, really isn't the way to lift anyone's spirit. "marie 07/08/2008 lol, you guys are all funny. unless you all look for clothes made in the US...then all of you buy from sweatshops. Unless you eat home grown products then all of you are supporting products that were grown (fruits, vegetables) or handled by various people who were working in sweat shop situations. nylon, thanks for the suggestion!?

Oh, and NickieSixx, You live in the city and you MISS WalMart? Could you BE any more twisted? WALMART? I'M EMBARRESED FOR NYLON TO SUPPORT THIS COMPANY. THOSE JEANS ARE 20 BUCKS BECAUSE CHILDREN ARE MAKING THEM IN POOR COUNTRIES! SUPPORT USA CLOTHING! COME ON LADIES, ITS NOT FASHIONABLE TO SUPPORT THESE TYPES OF COMPANIES! SHAME ON NYLON.

THIS IS FOR "Felifel". YOUR COMMENT ABOUT GIRLS NOT HAVING MONEY AND NEED CLOTHES AND TELLING YOUNG WOMEN TO GET OFF THERE HIGH HORSES ABOUT SHOPPING AT WALMART. GROW A BRAIN YOU IDOT, THERES OTHER PLACES TO GO, GO TO A THRIFT STORE, RECYCLE, WHAT ABOUT OUR ENVIRONMENT!? GET A JOB, WHERE YOU CAN GET A GREAT DISCOUNT ON JEANS. HAVE CLOTHING SWAP PARTIES WITH YOUR FRIENDS, DON'T TELL ME WALMART IS YOUR ONLY OPTION! COME ON THIS IS THE 20TH CENTURY! UNLESS YOU LIVE IN THE MIDDLE OF NO WHERE, THEN OBVIOUSLY YOUR OBLIVIOUS TO ALL THE FABULOUS PLACES YOU CAN SHOP.

07/11/2008

you guys need to check out American Apparel..started by a Canadian, it features super trendy, well made, brand-free, sweat-free clothes at a reasonable price. Terry, uses store employees for all his models, all the staff are super-chill, styles, and love their place of employment. I love my skinny jeans as much as the next fashionista, but Walmart and the likes should not be supported, it's market populism dudes, your vote is the purchase you make in the market place, and every vote counts. Choose wisely. Our future depends on it. Love and Light.

Maggie

07/11/2008

OHHHHH no. don't get me started on American Apparel. I still buy the clothes, though. ;) But man. I bet this is the last time Nylon lists affordable clothes.

07/11/2008

i would totally buy them if they fit. i'm 26 and i have finally had to admit that only kids jeans fit me right :( and most places just don't seem to think kids need to wear skinny or any sort of trendy jean. lucky for me there is abercrombie kids... but seriously, stop hating on nylon, they can't please everyone!! i love u nylon! http://kittenfarts.blogspot.com

I love skinny jeans. But I wouldn't shop at walmart to get them. There are other great deals elswhere at place like Forever 21 and Charollette Russe. I also perfer dark skinny jeans rather than light. Darker jeans look more expensive no matter where you get them. but these jeans are pretty cute. I'm just boycotting walmart because in the process of making those jeans some little kid in a factory somewhere was starving and working his 12th hour that day.

i think that any pair of skinny jeans will do. these actually do look alright, but i wouldn't by them at walmart. not because i'm like "omg.....walmart, ew!" but because walmart doesn't have any ethic responsibility.

07/26/2008

sweet! i usually don't shop at walmart, because where i live, walmart is frightening. i like forever 21, as many people wrote about, because you can get great-fitting denim in many varieties for less than $20. there's even some for as low as $12.50, regular price.

Maggie

07/29/2008

I actually bought some of these at W&M (as I will call it) and they're great. LEI has always fit me really well, so I didn't even try them on. They aren't as tight as I like skinny pants to be (Urban Outfitters' BDG Cigarette Jeans do the trick for me), but they're still great. LOVE them.

I like taylor swift At least she's not promoting like 500$ jeans You can buy cool jeans at target,forever21,old navy, charlotte russe, anchor blue... Im definately not gonna fork over more than 50$ for my jeans Its just a waste GO NYLON P.s. you don't have to shop at walmart stop hating losers

LEI is bad quality

03/18/2009

I bought the LEI jeans at Walmart for $20 last fall. They completely fell apart after about 5 washes. The material was thin as paper, and I should have known. I trusted the brand name. Never again, LEI, at Walmart or wherever else they're sold!I thought about complaining to Walmart, and still might.
