VINTAGE LA

VINTAGE LA

Designer clothes on a milk-money budget? A new book shows you how.

Jennifer Brandt Taylor has a secret to tell you. The vintage guru and LA native has just revealed her new book, Vintage LA, and here at Nylon we are swooning. The book reads like a treasure hunt with all the best (and oldest) secrets under the twinkling Hollywood sign of Tinseltown and beyond.

J.B. Taylor, who is currently uncovering the buried treasures of the Big Apple, gave NYLON universal tips for snagging vintage and a sneak preview of hip NY places that are, of course, jam-packed with history.

* Look Up*. When entering a store literally look the store up and down; it’s my credo when it comes to vintage shopping. I find that the best things are usually hidden high up on dusty shelves or get tucked away under tables or down low.

*Research.* Look at the town you live in as if you’ve never seen it before. Start exploring and going into places you would never usually think of going into. Take a really cool, creepy-looking restaurant supply place that might be a treasure trove of 1930s dishware.

*Carry Bread.* Always have cash with you even when shopping in vintage boutiques, so you can ask if they are willing to negotiate if you buy a bunch of things. The asking price isn’t always the price! If you’re nice, and you ask politely they usually will work with you.

And all you New Yorkers take note of these Vintage NY goodies that J.B. Taylor unearthed to us:

Fluke Vintage
Stop in here to get your fix of peter pan collars (think: Rosemary’s Baby) and outlandish ‘80s jumpsuits. No digging necessary.
186 Bedford Avenue (Williamsburg)

Keens Steakhouse
The snazzy restaurant’s history runs deep—all the way back to 1885—and it boasts the coolest (and largest) collection of old-fashion smoking pipes that line the ceiling, just try not to spend your whole dinner looking up or you might start seeing the rich and famous ghosts of New York’s past!
72 W. 36th Street New York, NY 10018

Poppet
As owner Billie Madley puts it, “misfits, champagne, dancing and pets always welcome” in her kaleidoscope-of-colorful-garbs vintage boutique.
350 E. 9th Street (East Village) www.poppetnyc.com

Academy Annex Records
Here you can find everything from a Bowie bootleg for $25 to a rare LP by ‘20s icon Josephine Baker for just the low cost of a New York subway ride!

CORRECTION! Billie Madley is NOT the owner of Poppet. I am the owner. Billie is merely a vintage dealer who is temporarily sharing space in the store. Get your facts straight before going to print.
