Can Kmart can make the cut in the NYLON fashion challenge?
Kmart was my latest, and very formidable, assignment in my ongoing quest to make chic outfits on the cheap. I needed a base piece of inspiration, but there were so, so many to choose from, and my shopping cart ended up in total chaos. While I was sorting through clothes outside my dressing room, this lady totally barged in and wouldn’t get out for what felt like hours. Finally, I decided to build a look around the men’s flannel shirt, which was on sale for $4, down from $14.99! What a steal. The Hanes grey wife beater came from a $1 clearance box. The men’s jean shorts were $14.99; surprisingly, they had a cool wash and pocket details. The black tights were $3.99—you can find cheaper ones at a drugstore, FYI. And lastly, the black sequined belt, which I used as a head wrap, reminded me of ’20s flapper style and was on sale for $4... making the grand total under $30. Whoa!

I shop at KMart all the time for stuff like that...i love going there just to get the basics for the outfit and then glamming it up with accessories and stuff...very fun..im glad it finally made it to your pages!

i have that flannel shirt. compliments of wal-mart though...cute outfits on a dime. definetly awesome...however i do think it could've been better.

i think the problem with the outfit is that it LOOKS like it came from kmart.
i think it would've been better if you went for something that wasn't expected.
in the end, i wasn't very impressed; moreso like, "oh.. well yeah. duh, you're going to find that."

I think the volumes are not balanced. Everything looks too big, I would've gone EITHER for a large top OR a large bottom.
I like the belt turned into a head wrap.

Why the hell people made this girl famous is beyond me. I thought we were above the famous for nothing penomenon. There are thousands of other girls who lok just like her on myspace. She's not pretty, anyone could put an outfit together like that, and she is a baby prostitute name dropper.

i read an article about this girl and how her life kinda got out of control. i was surprised that she was in the magazine. i dunno, i think she should start losing some of her publicity. this ordinary girl is becoming infamous for partying...just my personal opinion.

i'm not impressed at all! yeah it's cheap ...but that's what you end up looking like - cheap! the oufit she put together just looks awkward...exactly like she does. why is everybody idolising her so much? she has no sense of style at all! and i'm not even mentioning her hair + make up! gross!

enough with the head bands, flannel, leggings, and cut off jeans! this look is definately not new. there are tons of people out there who have been wearing all of those for over 2 years now! i'm not opposed to finding a fashionable look for a cheaper price, but let's try and find something NEW please...

Myself a los angeleino fashionista. I feel as though you don't portray the good in los angeles. Cory Kennedy... iknow a star in her "own right", makes some decent headlines: "Fashion advice from Cory Kennedy." Since a young age my friends and i always assembling fabulous outfitts out of pieces from bins and street corners i find this underwhelming. Any one could have done this. Im sorry but its unimpressive.

It wasnt an extremly difficult thing to do, finding an outfit at kmart, expecially since they're known for having some cute shoes, ( my friend has some that I swore were Steve Maddens, or at least very similiar) Now the issue where she had to find an outfit at HomeDepot and actually pulled it off, now that is what I call a hard to do task done well.

(1) The outfit would have looked better without the black tights.
(2) For something attempting to be "lax" and "chill",, it still manages to look way too contrived because of the headband and the heavy accessories.
(3) Plaid/wife beater looks trashy when you have big breasts. Perhaps it would have worked on someone a bit more rail/waif-thin.
(4) Would have been cute if she found cheap, cool sunglasses to go with it instead of the headband maybe.
(5) They didn't show the shoes she's wearing so it's kind of impossible to make a "complete outfit" judgment.
(6) I think the excessiveness of the outfit locates it within a genre that contains a cliche stigma against it (hipster) that normal people generall try to avoid. As a remedy, I believe that less is more. Less accessories, less breasts, less hipster.

Dude. do you all not see how sloppy this outfit really is? If it wasn't cory kennedy who put it together and modeled it, none of you lemmings would like it. Can you imagine how gross you'd feel wearing those awful shorts??
the hype around cory is all that keeps this look (well...most of the looks she has on) afloat. sorry guys, thumbs DOWN.

I think the outfit is fine but not particularly amazing or inventive. Pretty sure that *all* my clothes are from Kmart or Target and people even tell me I look good! I don't understand how people think it's so difficult to find nice clothes there :( haha
(of course, they will hardly ever be perfectly fitted but it all depends on what you do with it)

what confuses me is why they did not show a single photo of the completed ensemble..? is photography required to be stealthy in kmart? it's odd that corey's so famous just for being a partier and this outfit is not particularly stunning, so two stahs.

Flannel is too much of a common thing in her style, but still, it's good for K-mart.
