Most secret societies protect a ritual, a religion, or occasionally, a clandestine DaVinci painting. But we’ve found one that’s only about perfume.
While most stateside beauty fiends have no idea there’s a perfume conspiracy in their midst, a group of fashion editors, jet setters, and scent addicts have been quietly shuffling to Europe for years for Molecule 01 and Escentric 01, fragrances so weird, nobody quite knows what they smell like.
The coven is quiet in America, but it’s riotous in Europe: When they first hit counters abroad, the duo of fragrances sold out like Kate Moss for TopShop clothes across the pond.
Now for round two, the makers of Molecule have decided to let Americans into the fragrance frenzy, for real. Later this month, Molecule 02 and Escentric 02 launch at L.A.'s Scent Bar and online at
luckyscent.com. We haven't had the chance to sniff them yet, but the press release sounds strangely promising:
Molecule 02 is derived from ambergris, a chemical excreted by whales and collected on shore after being transformed by effects of salt and the sun. It is said to have a "nutty, warm" scent that contrasts Escentric 02's "cleaner" scent, which the creator says is reminiscent of "opening a brand new laptop".If the individual scents sound strange or unfamiliar, it's because they're meant to be worn together to create the unique, beautiful aroma. Like potato chips and ketchup or Erin Fetherston and Target, some unusual combinations are definitely worth trying. We'll trust our dozens of obsessed European friends that these perfumes are among those serendipitous pairings.
