The clothes in Rozae Nichols' aptly-named line can be worn inside out and upside down.
Fashion trends are turning over at a faster pace than ever, but Rozae Nichols isn't interested in conspicuous consumerism. After her adventures in the rag trade in Hong Kong and Paris, Nichols returned to Los Angeles to launch her eponymous label in 1993. But with new line, R.N. Convertible, she’s switching things up. Casual and luxurious jersey pieces can be mixed and converted into different styles. Nichols is meticulous about making clothes that are part of an organic creative process. "I don't like fashion—I like good clothing and beauty that comes from a very true place," said Nichols. "There's a holistic aspect for me in that every garment needs to mean something." With a penchant for army-navy surplus and deconstruction, Nichols is a fan of functional design. "You can wear the clothes inside out, upside down, and backwards—and they will last for a very long time," she explained. Armed with a degree in graphic design, Nicholas brings an artisan quality to every aspect of the garment, favoring a refined aesthetic and extensive hand finishing. But above all, she’s practical, adding, "Less is more—you have what you love and you have what you need."
