ok, so i just FLIPPED OUT when i saw Richmond, VA on here. My hometown has the coolest style and vibe, and the downtown shows are so great. Richmond draws people from all over, including amazing musicians and styles of every variety, and it's often overlooked.
you just made my day, NYLON.
Lisa
11/06/2008
Woohoo! I'm from northern VA, but Richmond has a place in my heart. The vibe of Richmond is definitely one of the best. Thanks Nylon!

11/06/2008
so i'm pretty mad at you guys for not telling me you were coming to my city. like, i would have seriously just been sitting on a curb all day waiting for someone with a camera to walk by, and then i'd get up and act not conspicuous. but regardless, these richmond kids rock too so it's fine.
(ps, we're not really a college town.)

I live in northern virginia, and i love going down to Richmond.I agree, it's nice to finally see Richmond get recognized.
good job Nylon :)

AH THIS IS AWESOME!!! I am from Northern Virginia outside of DC, but I have been to Richmond many times and love it! It's awesome that you guys focused on VA because it really is one of the most eclectic mixes of styles i've ever seen... I want more, please!

Richmond is not a college town...if you're referring to VCU. Yeah the college is there, but its not a college town.
But glad RVA is getting attention. We have such great spots like Carry town, the slip, ect. You like richmond style, you should come down the road to Norfolk and visit ODU.

11/07/2008
totally totally totally not a rumors photoshoot....all these photos were taken by my lovely business parter marshe, but most of them are simply of well dressed people that have walked by our store...i watched her chase after them with the sole purpose of getting Richmond some form of online fashion recognition...recognition for a city that has had to thrift shop or order online in order to look somewhat decent...
Marshe and i are the 2 in the 666 shirts if you really fell in love with one of us Lily :)

Definitely not a Rumors photo shoot. Just some of the stylish individuals you'll see in Richmond. There could have been more variety, but this is still true to live.

I agree with all positive comments on this section. Youve made my day, and Richmond is one of the best cities on the East Coast. I live in NOVA and I visit there at least three times a month, because of constant parties and friends I have there.

Oh, a rashy beard and a scarf in 90 degree heat! So cool!Seriously, what is so impressive about dressing like a carbon copy cobrasnake loving hipster d-bag? The girls look pretty cute, but the guys look like a bunch of gaylords.

Having lived in Richmond for the past 18 years of my life, I think Richmond "street style" is way more of an anomaly than the norm...but-- congratulations on giving my underrepresented home some attention and recognition!

Seeing this makes me so ridiculously happy. There are so many places in Richmond with people that look like they should be in a magazine. Richmond Street style is an insane mixture of New York, L.A., London, Tokyo, and Sydney styles and it works amazingly. Richmond you ROCK and you deserve this! On the other hand VCU is not stylish AT ALL. VCU has nothing to do with Richmond style there are a select few in the school that can be put into this catagory. And yes this is a Rumors photoshoot but look who else is getting Richmond style out there? NO ONE BUT RUMORS! And those photos are just a TASTE of Richmond style. so stop hating on Rumors and keep rockin your style! thanks buh bye.
DJ DREW.B
11/07/2008
Correction this is NOT a Rumors 'Photoshoot' Marshe from Rumors just happened to take the initiative and take pictures of stylish little Richmond kids and her photo blog was recognized my Nylonmag.com. Just lettin you kids KNOW!. Peace, Love and keep on looking GOOD!

We covered Rumors in the last issue of Urge magazine. I completely agree with what has been said here about their contribution to Richmond's style level. Marshe's photos capture fabulous street fashion - a culture they are helping to stimulate. They also show the quirky beauty of the Richmond streets themselves: gorgeous old bricks and store windows, wild graffiti, and that funky old truck. Nice work, Nylon.

Richmond style is SICK! Thats all there is to it! Keep it up!

11/07/2008
What the hell? I just saw a link to this on online and half of these kids are my friends... Stephen (the dude in pink eating the apple) is the best dressed dude I know! But seriously, fashion is stoopid... and Rumors is cool because it has shows and sells local music...

Richmond has been looking amazing for years but Rumors has put that fashion into action. Sure, they got the new lines (which the lazy, more established shops are now suddenly starting to carry) but Rumors is known more for its culture. Walk by any given night and you can't tell if its a shop, gallery, club, theater, or community center. How many other cities can say their local DIY space is a boutique? You wish your town was this inspired (and cute)! Casey and Marshé are literally re-rewriting the book on how to run a business. They live on the cheap and so we can have a stage, and they'll still be looking good long after you've dried up your parents' money. It ain't just a lifestyle, it's a new chapter in Richmond history.
A
11/07/2008
Not that great as to boast about it. Most people who say it's awesome and "richmond inspired" haven't really payed attention to anything but AA catalogs. Richmond doesn't really have a young hip identity that it tries so hard to set out because it's a college city. It's a mixing pot of kids from newport news, VA Beach, and neighboring Richmond counties so you can't it has it's own style when it's just cop out versions of NYC or Chicago. Cept Steven, and I love Zirchi
GET FUCKED!
11/07/2008
Right... because so many hipsters from NYC and Chicago actually grew up there! Isn't New York considered the world's mixing pot anyway? How do you reconcile that with your homogenous sense of style?
Emily
11/07/2008
cute style even though its a bit out there on the second to last one.

11/08/2008
As a native New Yorker, I must say, stop the hate man. These people look like they're comfortable in these clothes and its something they like to wear, so chill out. People are saying "not original," or a blend of "hipsters from ny," but honestly, being on the streets of New York it all seems the same now. Its become one big blob of the same street style, and its been uninspiring, and you know its fake because a year ago more than half the people dressing like they are now, weren't then. In addition, a lot of the so called "hipsters" in ny did come from other cities, and states, but I notice a lot of them came here, and adopted what seemed like the new yorker style (to them) with maybe a small amount of their own in attempts to blend in, so I must say they're style isn't entirely original. However, a lot of the people in these photos look like they have a distinct personality, or something quirky about them. Let them have their fun!!!!!

Every pos feedback post on this subject comes from critics who either live there or used to. Not biased at all.
I do live here and think the whole scene is pretty meh.
It's like this army of the less than average.
The mentality is "fuck it, who cares if I look dumb (or dreadfully out of shape)".
You can see it when they dance, hear it when they talk and smell it when they don't bathe.
Hate to come off like a hater, just pointing out the obvious.
Don't try so hard at trying not to try so hard.

first of all my dj name is long jawns and not "dj long". so to whoever was trying to impersonate me good try dickhead. i support rumors to the fullest and theyve done nothing but push the best and unique style in richmond since theyve opened. whoever wrote that comment as me is probably sitting at home reading blogs all night and jerking off to pictures on the cobrasnake while pouring sparks all over their buttholes. sweet life bro!

11/09/2008
Not only is this a pathetic scope of representation, but also a trite urban outfitters ad. Please. Richmond was cool 5 years ago when you couldn't swipe your university ID for an 'indie' screen printed tee..not to mention that efforts such as this are what ruin the preservation of any type of individuality that has to be gasping for air at this point. It's over. And so is American Apparel.

I can't believe Richmond is on NYLON! I grew up in Richmond, and could not be more enchanted with it! Yes, most of the photos are standard street style with a touch of hipster, the kids down south are really quite forward. Amazing independent designer AND vintage scene. Two enthusiastic thumbs up!

This is a poor portrayal of Richmond's style. I doubt these kids grew up in Richmond, seeing as this is a photo shoot for Rumors. While the clothing at Rumors is nice it is overpriced and too cookie cutter hipster. It looks like everything from Urban Outfitters and American Apparel with a tiny bit of DIY.

It is wonderful richmond is in nylon. from what i can see nowhere is rumors boutique mentioned until the haters got upset. So thanks for the free publicity. If you dont like the photos take some yourself. Rumors does more for the city than you can imagine. They have had over 500 bands play their store in the past year not to mention it is a second home to and many others. Not many 23 years old own their own business's. Go rumors. DOWN WITH HATERS. and it is a community space. Independent affordable art. Independent music. Independent sweat shop free clothing. If you disagree go in the store and meet the girls. I assure you that you have never m.et two more inspiring people. and if you cant afford a so called overpriced sweatshop free shirt then you could go to the consignment shop upstairs in the store and buy a shirt for 3 bucks. You clearly are a loser hater. suck on D's nuts D.

So I live a block away from Rumors. And I am an art student here in Richmond. And I know two of the guys in these photos. This is the Richmond scene. Love it or hate it, hipsters.
Niki
11/12/2008
I'm glad that this Rumors photo shoot got Richmond on the map, but that's really not representative of the city. Richmond really isn't a college town, it's just home to a college. That doesn't mean that every person in the city is a student or that every student in the city dresses alike. This blurb about Richmond should really have been extended to more than just that one block of the city- to where other people with other clothes hang out.

hurray richmond. I moved to richmond 4 years ago from northern va. Richmond is a mecca for kids all around va who don't quite fit it. How can you hate on a town that gives you Avail, Strike Anywhere, Best Friends Day and Slaughterama. How can you hate. Thankyou Nylon for coming to Richmond to take pictures. I wish there were more carytown and southside looks but i still think this is the coolest thing ever.

11/14/2008
congrats marshe & casey!
having grown up here, richmond made me proud on nov. 4th. very happy to see our town getting national press for some positive things rather than our not so positive past.
kudos to the ladies running one of the few truly independent stores in town.
to all the meanies, let me know when you open a business of your own, and then let me know how well you do pleasing everyone all the time. no, this is not representative of ALL the style in richmond, it's a slice, and a good one.
the bottom line is... woman-owned, sweatshop-free, community involvement. again, let me know when you're doing the same. peace.

Ok 1st of all richmond is the shiz. You will never find another city with such a high percentage of well-dressed people-and it's like that every day. I see the guy on the left in pic 17 around town and he is always wearing something innovative. Ya richmond has more to offer than indie style, but what people here do is take high fashion ideas and apply it to everyday life and then add a little guts. I'm glad we're finally getting some recognition. richmond IS a mecca for people. Do you think I could dress crazy and creative in NOVA? Really?
jack
11/20/2008
motherfuckers, richmond is not a mecca for people from nova, or anywhere else. this style looks silly.

People who boast their love for H&M should not be able to have an opinion in a fashion forum. I mean seriously.
Mass Production now thats attractive.
The diversity is not found in the clothing. It is found in the people in the photos. I've met people in Virginia who hadn't met a black, spanish or asian person until they were in college. It is amazing that on VCU campus in Richmond Va that all types of people can be found around each other. Different races, Different sexes, Different sexual preferences, Different Religions but with similar style. That is what is so amazing about these photos. Living in capital of the confederacy many people would find it hard to believe that those pictures were taken in richmond.. that is the point.
People who have lived here and moved away 5 years ago would probably have trouble believing that the pictures were taken here. The pictures are not a promotion for my store. It is a blazing victory fire saying that the youth are taking over Richmond. We will own the buildings we will own the bar we will make the laws. We are changing the future to make up for the past.
IDIOT. and also Hater. The problem with this town is people are such haters and they dont appreciate shit. You have stores like Dominion,Pink, Need, Henry, House of Lukaya, Eurotrash,Clementime, World of Mirth,Plan 9,Vinyl Conflict, Velocity Comics, Chop Suey, Harrison st Coffee, Chop Suey Tuey, Recycles, Bunny Hop, you have bars like empire, cous cous, Helens, restaurants like Edo's and six burner 821 all owned by amazing people and its not enough to satisfy the lazy residents. You Live in a town where everything is within a three mile radius.
i sent nylon these pictures because I am proud of my city. I am proud of Virginia we are not trailer park jerry springer dancing outlaw cousin fuckers. Which is how we have been betrayed for years in all types of media.
why dont you get off your ass and do something. You think you know so much about the city why don't you help with the advancement of it.

It's nice to see RVA get some love but all y'all who are so impressed by it must have grown up on a farm or something. It's a racist, clique-y, small time town whose art students take themselves way too seriously (as they are apt to do). Plenty of "cool kids" but few eccentrics.

The only girl who actually dresses like that everyday is the girl who works at crossroads, she's fly but everyone else is in a Rumors photoshoot. Try again. Harrison street's regurgitated BS is not representative of this city.

These people have no style, nor do they have any sense of uniqueness. They're uniforms are the same as the fraternity boys who wear pink oxfords. Apparently, to get your photo taken all you need to do is shop at American Apparel.

RICH SCENESTERS KILLED MY NEIGBORHOOD
01/14/2009
Unfortunately, most of these clothes come from Rumors. Conveniently, most of this stores’ customers are upper middle class suburban kids that moved into Richmond from the richest of the rich suburbs in Virginia, that is Northern Virginia. I have lived in Richmond all my life, I have seen fashions come and go as with any other pop movement, and more than anything this store just acts as a form of self-indulgent scenester mental masturbation. You want to play their game, you’ve got to pay high prices and you’ve got to suck up or get the hell out of their store. Sure, many of the clothes are independently made, often American made at that, but how many store owners openly make fun of their customers when they walk in and they don’t dress like them? Rumors is a waste of space and is simply just a plight on the Richmond community. It attracts more people who are concerned about looking hip and fitting in than actually making a difference in the local community through and community service volunteering. Sure, listen to some spoiled college kid whose mommy and daddy floors their fashion bills, but all that this place does is further ostracize the non-conforming non-conformist. Although I love my city and what it offers, I will always think WAY too many people try too damn hard to fit a certain façade, a certain visual aesthetic that will hopefully make them fit in (scenesters who pretend they are egalitarian and want to make a difference but instead they just get drunk and screw the place up). This gallery doesn't depict what's good about Richmond, and the chosen photos of clothes are not showing anything unique. As with any store, this store targets a certain look and let me assure any reader that most Richmonders can’t afford this shit nor do most teens and college kids dress like this. The owners are nearing middle age and sadly their targeted crowd’s ages never progress that much higher than a college kid. Places like Rumors convey a sense that this city is filled with a bunch of egotistical, pretentious, morons that are just trying to look cool and fit in with their respective cliques.

FASHION IS SRS BZNS YOU GAIS.
so. yeah. while i appreciate that you ladies are giving it your all to put rva on the map culture and fashion wise, what did you really expect from this? two of those guys have the same hoodie on. that means one of two things: 1) this is an utterly faked fashion shoot using only clothing from your store (and a jacket from target lolol) or 2) two "random dudes" walking down a street on a typical day in rva just happened to be wearing the same exact hoodie with the same exact art on it. so either it totally misrepresents us or it makes us look entirely unoriginal. if you really have purely altruistic intentions, and don't just want publicity, methinks you would take an evening and hit up the spots to take some more diverse pictures. just my 2 cents. ps - will someone please give walking stereotype girl in the blue dress a cheeseburger? way to promote healthy body image, guys. wow.

These are either BORING or they are so over the top they are just people trying to be WEIRD. There is no STYLE, they are just kids that are trying to be stylish, but don't want to really put in the learning factor? What ever happened to Chanel's motos? What ever happened to 'couture'? There is a time and place, and they seriously are off.

Have you people BEEN to Richmond? ...and, if so, have you been ANYWHERE else? If you're not familiar with RVA, here it is in a nutshell. You'll love Richmond if you enjoy:
- civil war history
- the "old south"
- segregation and racial tension (i've even seen the rebel flag flying in front of a few homes out in the east end)
- Panhandlers (huge problem in downtown Richmond)
- apathy
- drinking on porches
- reading about debutante balls
- getting lip service from strangers
- watching hipsters (or hanging out with them - only the "deck" need apply):
- Slow service
- People yelling at you while providing slow service
- "homeless" kids toting their booze in Gucci bags
- making plans and changing them 10 times before you finally cancel
- looking at paintings of horses
- looking at sculptures of horses
- "keeping up appearances" (a.k.a. hypocrisy)
- social cliques
- social retards
- the status quo

here's my little...rant.
first off, i'm really glad to see richmond being represented in nylon. i go to vcu and i love nylon so it's a win win.
second, however, some of the "fashionables" of vcu are snobs. not all. but most. i've heard a lot of things about the fashion majors there and it bugs me to no end about how some of these people think there better than everyone just because of their clothes which aren't even original. do i like urban outfitters, american apparel, topshop, etc? yes. but do i think i'm the bees knees because of it? no. a lot of people in richmond dress exactly the same which makes me feel like nobody is original sometimes.
gah. i don't even know how to explain this situation. GAH.

I <3 rva so props to them for trying. I do feel like these are some bad examples though, they don't do the city justice. VCU school of the arts is the number one public art school in the nation right now, 3rd if you include private schools and they have a really good fashion program so there are plenty of people there who know how to dress. It was just a bad hair day.

I live in RVA, born and raised, so this is pretty awesome! Richmond is full of eclectic people and styles, all mixed into one frikken amazing city! It should be showcased more often.

whenever you see people like these in the streets wherever it may be, it goes to show that they're thinking out of the box, unique and different in their way of lifestyle. they look comfortable and confident wearing those clothes, and that matters when it comes to fashion.

I have many friends who attend VCU and everyone's right for saying this isn't a good representation of Richmond. Most of them make their own clothes and shop at thrift stores, not American Apparel, or Rumors?

FYI not all these photos were taken by "MARSCHE WYCHE." A couple of them were taken by VCU Art Intensive students from 2008, me being one them (I have the jpegs to prove it). I find it insulting that you CASEY would credit them to someone else when we graciously did a shoot free of charge and gave you the photos to promote your measly store. Though it has been a few years since these were posted, as a photographer I deserve my credit.
