THE INSIDER: GENEVIEVE JONES

THE INSIDER: GENEVIEVE JONES

A fashion icon tells us her style secrets.

Genevieve Jones has been dubbed the Holly Golightly of our times. The willowy, almond-eyed It Girl who swapped Baton Rouge for Bungalow 8 in the early ’00s now counts Julia Restoin Roitfeld, Anouck Lepere, and Sean Lennon and as BFFs, and sits front row at Zac Posen, Marc Jacobs, and Proenza Schouler. She is photographed more than most movie starlets, and dresses better too. Which is why her eponymous jewelry line has been so hotly anticipated. Inspired by her travels and handcrafted in Thailand, Genevieve Jones Collection is a kaleidoscopic, organic line of bracelets shaped like snake vertebrae, shell rings dipped in 18-karat gold, and the—now ubiquitous—diamond-studded safety pin earrings. Here, Ms. Jones tells it like It is.

What was the first outfit you ever styled for yourself?
When I was about 13 I was so totally in love with this outfit from Lip Service or Tripp—not totally sure—but it was a tight black miniskirt and matching long-sleeve top that showed my tummy and it had a cross skull bone print all over both pieces. I wore with fishnet stockings and black Dr. Martens. I accessorized with tons of flea market jewelry.  I was obsessed with collecting big Lucite rings from the ’60s and I wore those on every finger. Ha, ha…that outfit shaped my life practically.

How would you describe your personal style today?
It’s classic taken to the edge. I just like to have fun and think I look great when I walk out the house. I anticipate every designer’s new collection each season. I looovvve dressing up! I don't have ‘bad days’ with frocks. I keep my already tiny closets half empty, filled, and spread out with only great pieces. I don't have anything that practical and/or any fillers lurking around but I take my American Apparel very seriously!  I may wear the same outfit four days in a row but at least I'm confident it’s a really chic outfit.

Who is your fashion icon?
My fashion icon is a tie between Charlotte Rampling and Donyale Luna. With Charlotte, it wasn't so much about her style—she is just so beautiful, she personifies “cool.” It’s her spirit I find fashionably iconic. With Donyale, she embodied fashion and turned it into life. I saw a picture of her in black lace up thigh-high boots and black vinyl pants and I made my mom take me shopping on Decateur Street [New Orleans] to get that look the day I saw her. I fell in love… I was 14.

What designers are you into these days?
Marc Jacobs and Zac Posen (they get their own row).
I love Rodarte, YSL, Christopher Kane, Balenciaga, Etro, Givenchy, Elise Overland, Alexander Wang, threeASFOUR, Thakoon, Kai Kühne, Jonathan Saunders, Bernhard Wilhelm, J. Mendel, Nina Ricci… Everybody!

What music is playing in the studio when you design?
I can't get enough of Yeasayer, Deerhunter, Phosphorescent, Grizzly Bear… Waiting for new TV on the Radio. Pharrell and Lil Wayne can do no wrong.  Ooiiy! Neil Young xoxo! He's my all time favorite. If I'm not working and I'm listening to him I'll start doing something creative like drawing or painting or just sitting, dreaming…

Will you expand your line to include clothing?
Right now I have my hands full with my jewelry and handbag line. I dream of doing tableware, cutlery, pottery, furniture, and even skateboards. I'd like to design jewelry collections for a fine jewelry house like Cartier, Chopard, Bulgari, Tiffany… I'm not picky. Honestly I don't think about designing clothes; maybe a drawing on a T-shirt. I'll do a capsule collection for a fashion label in a heartbeat though and trust it would be amazing! Truly, its all very romantic ideas I hope to indulge in sometime in my lifetime.

Genevieve Jones an "IT girl"? if you're living in the year 2005-ish. She lied about her age and origin, and kind of just popped out of nowhere. However, I do like the safety pins.

HMMM.... Why did you take the energy to log in just to be a hater? GJ is an IT Girl and always will be. You can't away someone's natural grace talent and style. She didn't pop out of nowhere and she didn't force great people to like her. She's a really special person and its nice that's she showing her skills. She put's herself out there and takes the rolls and the punches. As for lying about her age, most ladies do, so what! Have you seen her in person?? Adorable! She looks bizarrely young, albeit boyish. And she never lied about her origin. What, did she claim to be samoan?? You should really get a life, get use to her, she's not going anywhere and just as she anticipates other designers collections, I'm definitely anticipating hers. Hating on good sucks! Get some love in your life, its all around. GJ is showing hers!!! A true and well deserved fashion icon!WORD!

I agree with you RL....Ms. Jones is a definite style winner and obviously a very nice person as well. Her line of jewelry is simply beautiful and the young woman can certainly dress! If she's in her early 30's from what I understand she looks great! In my opinion though she really looks like she's a 20-something.

She is in her early 30's. I went to junior high and high school with her - she was a year ahead of me and I am 31. She is very pretty and looks younger than she is. I remember her as being a very kind person who was never too cool to talk to a younger kid.

G Jones is awesome! who cares if she lied about her age.She will not be the first or last. I attend NYU and she is all the buzz on campus. I love her and Taysha S Valez. Two brown chicks that just popped up! and turned the game on it's head. I see why people hate LOL. They can't handle it and they have no choice but to get over it or ignore it. Go Go Go Genny Jones. I will be buying items from her line.

I knew this girl back in the day, in New Orleans - Her apartment was spare but she had two bedroom closets FILLED with clothes, she was always dressed impeccably. I didn't find her fashion sense to be very risky or cutting edge at all, just classy and simple, with the occasional glitter - it was the mid nineties after all... I think it's great she's out living her dream, in fact this goes beyond the dreams she shared with me.

So what if GJ did pop out of nowhere? So did most of today's top designers. Most people don't have the luxury of being born with the proverbial silver spoon. I am proud of her for opening her own doors and living her dreams. Most of us are too afraid (and not talented enough) to do that.

I think the issue why so many people "hate" her is not the fact that she just "popped" out of nowhere but the reason that she integrates herself too much to be seen with the likes of Tinsley Mortimer and other "socialites" (take note of the use of quotes). Had she been more honest with her background and NOT create a sordid, make-up upbringing, she would be loved. Unfortunately, she is one of those hangers-on who deny their backgrounds just to appear that they have been born with a silver spoon. Be true to yourself Gennie.

STOP HATIN ON THE SISTA! I think she great she went after what she wanted and got it! Do you know how hard it is for blk women to get into fashion and the social scene? For yrs blk women weren't even recognized the way GJ is. So let her do her thing.

well, coco chanel did the same thing too.-.- so i guess its just normal for someone to be sensitive about their upbringing. its all about reinventing yourself anyway.

I remember Genevieve as well. If I remember correctly me, a friend of mine and Amani maybe hung out a few times. She was very eclectic even then in our teens. I saw her one more time in New Orleans and she may have been about 18 at the time. I'm 36 and I know she was a few years younger than me. At any rate, I'm happy for her success in the fashion industry, and I wish her a healthy, graceful life. To see her so much in the press is just crazy insane to me, but when I think about how different she was, it was totally inevitable. Jewelry is amazing by the way!
